These awards have been designed to celebrate the diversity...

Diversity my Kraut ass.

I just took a gander at the Multifacted Awards to see who won. I was nominated for two categories and TOTALLY DID NOT expect to win. That's not my issue. However...

Why am I noticing a pattern with the MFA? Why are most of the winners a.) authors I have never fucking heard of (the exception being [livejournal.com profile] dementordelta -- congratulations sweets!) and b.) mostly SS/HG fics?

Not that I have anything against the pairing, but...

WHAT.

THE.

FUCK?

How did [livejournal.com profile] cybele_san only get an honorable mention for IYAP?

*throws hands up*

Can't answer a but b is easy. Very few stories that aren't SS/HG are ever nominated.

I think the people who run the awards are Ashwinder/Sycophant Hex people, so a lot of the participation comes from that.

Silly non-LJ fandom. Confuses me so. Not that I get LJ fandom or anything.

Why not keep the MFA to themselves then?

That is a heck of a lot of SS/HG... I'm guessing that the nomination link went around their circles a bit more than they did around others?

I've read some of the SS/HG stories, and I can't believe that they edged out the others in the category based on sheer merit; it's just because of their pairing. Hinge of Fate beating IYAP, for instance.

IYAP was one of the first fics I read when I joined fandom.

Four words: HP Fandom is big. There are people who receive hundreds of reviews on archives or lists and we el-jayers have never heard of them. Probably this MFA represents only a corner of fandom.

Haha. Absolutely.
As [livejournal.com profile] ptyx said: "HP Fandom is big". Yep, Big fandom, very big fandom, not very "logical" (and that´s such a subjective word these days, I know. I am as guilty as the next fellow) most of the time either and that´s why we love/hate it most of the time. But, IYAP receiving only an honorable mention? Well, I am feeling positively alone in my logical/illogical corner.

/sniffs like the innocent little girl she is/
What?

PS: I lost my link. Mehh, I delete it without thinking and I wanted to check up some authors, you never know. /feels even more alone :)/

Well, so far [livejournal.com profile] dementordelta won. And I believe [livejournal.com profile] thetreacletart did too. Two out of how many is just BULLSHIT.

I sort of think the same thing about "top 10 fics" and "top 10 art pieces" of fandom. What might be top 10 on LJ might not be in say, a the H/Hr centered part of fandom or centered around Fiction alley. Same with art. Someone could have a beautiful gallery on an obscure website that might never get the traffic someone at Deviantart might. The same questions posed in different parts of fandom would have completely different answers. For someone to claim to have the DEFINITIVE list of XYZ is virtually impossible in a fandom this enourmous.
Those awards do seem very SS/HG heavy handed, but it's to be expected if run by a site that ships that couple. I'd assume if the SQ had hosted these awards, they would be very OBHWF heavy in recs.
Probably their best bet to insure the diversity they so proclaim would be to send a blurb of "hey, we're having this thing" to the heavily trafficed main shippng and genfic sites out there, like the Quill and Portkey and House Rivalry and other such places.
But I really know nothing of running the mechanics of an fanfic award type thing, so I could just be blowing smoke out of my ass about this all. That list has pointed me out to a few things I've never seen, so I'm grateful for that.

Some of the stuff on the list looks very Sue-ish to me. Like Snape/OFC -- just NO.

I'm SO with you regarding IYAP.

But like other people said, the majority of the voters must be from another part of fandom. The SS/HG part in particular. And somehow I'd expected these results, seeing how many SS/HG fics were nominated to begin with. I wish there had been some diversity.

Yeah, one of my D/Hr fics was nominated and figured it had a snowball's chance in hell of winning. I can do you one better - I've never heard of any of the winners. So not my corner of fandom.

Surely you've heard of [livejournal.com profile] dementordelta? Or maybe not. She writes Snape/Harry exclusively.

Well, I think very few stories that were Severus/anyone other than Hermione were nominated.

Plus, the Severus/Hermione pairing is very popular with the het fans.

I am kind of relieved in a way. People I *love* to read were not winners, which reassures me that I am in good company since my fic didn't win last go round.

I've been nominated for all three waves of MFA, and I totally didn't expect to win, either. The first round, I had a Harry/Sirius necrofic up against 15 Harry/Draco fics. Like THAT was going to happen.

They feature a specific character each round. It was Snape this time, which might have been where all the Snape/Hermione fics came from.

Also, they accept a wicked amount of nominations. I think when there are 30-40 fics per category, people vote from the fics they've read instead of reading everything listed.

I've not read IYAP. Do I need to?

I felt weird voting, since I hadn't read all the stories in any given category. I don't read SS/HG for the most part, so I didn't vote for any of those, I don't think. I've read a couple, but they were written by people on my f-list or their recs.

There are so many SS/HG shippers that they're going to win even if a smaller percentage of those fans vote. Being nominated is plenty good.

Necrofic is TERRIBLY underrated :P

And yes, read IYAP. It will shatter you into a million tiny pieces.

I think it's because many of the voters drift over from Sycophant Hex, and most of the people who frequent there were there when it was Lord and Lady Snape, so the majority of them are SS/HG shippers who may not even read SS/OFC or other canon characters.

Yep, noticed exactly the same. The leaning towards SS/Hg was pretty bleeding obvious, and honestly, I felt bad for all the slashers out there. Guess my point of view is as biased as any, but I really thought there was plenty of damn good SS/just-about-anybody-else-but-Hermione that should've deserved some recognition.

Then again, I didn't even vote this time, so I guess this is the point where I shut the hell up and back away slowly.

(Not that I won't continue to bitch about it. I'll just do it more quietly;)

Kleio, your icon amuses me greatly. Snape could sure use some L'Oreal to bring a bit of color to that sallow complexion of his. And of course some eyeliner. *coughs*

What I'm disappointed at is that the fics I nominated didn't win. They didn't even get a mention (sorry Cybele- your amazing epic slipped my wee little mind ;). Instead we find the flurry of SS/HGs and (ugh) OFCs. There's even a fic that won that didn't have Snape in the pairing, and this round was devoted to him! (Femmeslash categories?)
