Playing With Fire
Snape had been a student of elemental magics. Fire was not his forte, but his campfire was, nonetheless, perfect.
Oddly enough, so was Potter's food preparation. Snape had been right to encourage the boy's burgeoning skill. It hadn't mattered that the idiot had burnt the recipe parchment (along with his hand) and was planning to improvise. Potter was as blessed as someone in the throes of Felix Felicis.
The precise pinch of this ingredient. The exact dash of that ingredient. Just right on the outside. Tender on the inside.
Snape looked up from his book, peering down The Nose at Potter with something akin to fondness. They were in the middle of nowhere, deep in the woods. Alone. Ravenous.
The flames rose and fell with Potter's skill. Hunger gnawed at their bellies. That was, until Potter tripped on a hidden root and dumped their meals, the clumsy oaf. Luckily for Potter, there were other fires to be tempered.
Saving his place, Snape set his book down with a lascivious grin. He took Harry roughly in his arms, creating another perfect fire.
Man may have created fire, but boy sure knew how to play with it.

Date: 2009-07-30 11:53 pm (UTC)Poor Harry! He almost got there. But the consequences weren't all that bad, after all. And I loved the "peering down The Nose" line too.
Thanks for this. It's really nice of you to write a story for us.

Date: 2009-07-31 03:19 am (UTC)And I loved the role reversal. Snape is often depicted as a skilled cook in fanon, and Harry is of course the fiery one, and I loved how you turned that on its head.
Very nice ficlet, Penny! Thank you!

Date: 2009-10-07 12:47 am (UTC)Gorgeously written. You are amazing!
PS- I love the capitalization for "The Nose". Is that yours or is that common in Snape circles online? I've never seen it before but I love it muchly.
This "anonymous" feedback was left for you as an Act of Magical Kindness, part of the Harry Potter Alliance's current campaign.
