Hangin' On to the Edge of Forever

Today is my 39th birthday, and man do I feel like I'm hangin' on to the edge of forever. Sometimes, I wonder how I've made it this far with all the crazy whacked-out shit I've done.

I still get carded for entrance into the casino, for liquor and for the occasional pack of cloves. I don't think I quite look my age, but still, I don't want to get older, dammit!

I really, really don't want to turn, much less think about, the big 4-0.

I have a whole year to think about this, but ladies, any advice? Thoughts. Wishes. Stories to share. Virtual cake and alkeehol. Hot nakey boys.

I remember reading when I was in my teens the aphorism, "If you don't grow up by the time you're 35, you don't have to." Some may find it terrifying. I decided they were words to live by.

Getting older... it's a state of mind. You can be aged at 27 and young at 100. I know this first-hand from my child-like (in the good ways) great-uncle who just turned 100 and my brother who looks hard-worn for 27.

Well, okay. Enough musings. *sends you a ship of naked boys and enough alcohol to float it*

Enjoy being 39 and on the leading edge of everything, not stuck in the middle!

Last year, I spent my 50th birthday drinking laxative for an emergency colonoscopy to try to figure out why I was so severely anemic I almost died. After something like that, you realize what the only alternative is to growing old and relax. Yeah, I'd like my twenty-year-old knees but I love my 51-year-old self.

I am not a huge fan of birthdays and have reached an age were I don't understand why people celebrate the fact that they get older. If I'd be really old then there would at least be a cause to celebrate I guess because it means I would have tricked death another year but in the middling years birthdays are totally pointless ...except for the gifts and the good food of course, so I wish you lots of nice birthdays gifts and a fabulous dinner =)

Oh, Happy Birhtday!!!! I can second the others in saying that 39 was much harder than 40. I started writing fanfic at 39--a fairly innocuous mid-life crisis. It does feel a little like a corner turned to turn 40, but it was not a bad corner at all. My friends wanted me to have a big celebration, but that didn't feel right to me. I went to a spa with my best friend. So, advice is celebrate in ways that make you feel good about yourself.

I can't issue any sage advice about age. I'm 40 and completely unfazed by it.

Happy birthday, love! And I'm afraid I can't help you, because I actually looked forward to my forties. *peers back over shoulder and adjusts binoculars* I'd known so many women who'd gotten their shit together, figured out who they were at long last, and had let go of old illusions both good and bad. They went after what they wanted and had a fruitful, interesting decade. When I turned forty I was full of life and restless to make changes, and I'd venture to say that I was in my prime. Alas, the change I chose to make was utterly made of fail, so I will warn you about that: it's still possible to be an idiot at one's mature peak.

Age didn't really start changing me physically until I was nearly fifty, and I've noticed the process speeds up once you hit mid-century. Especially if you're prone to insomnia. You're a long way off from that.

Give yourself something you've always wanted as a birthday present. That's a good way to start a new year. Also, do something you've never done before, followed by something you know you love to do. Just to mix it up a little but reward yourself no matter what. *hands you cake and your favorite brew*

I've made up my mind... I'm going to Japan for my 40th b-day. Wanna come with? *G*
