Hangin' On to the Edge of Forever

Today is my 39th birthday, and man do I feel like I'm hangin' on to the edge of forever. Sometimes, I wonder how I've made it this far with all the crazy whacked-out shit I've done.

I still get carded for entrance into the casino, for liquor and for the occasional pack of cloves. I don't think I quite look my age, but still, I don't want to get older, dammit!

I really, really don't want to turn, much less think about, the big 4-0.

I have a whole year to think about this, but ladies, any advice? Thoughts. Wishes. Stories to share. Virtual cake and alkeehol. Hot nakey boys.

I was so freaked by 39 that I worried all year, and by the time 40 came around it was almost a relief :)

My advice? Celebrate your 40th birthday (in a year) like no other! This is what I'm going to do in a few more weeks. :-) I love celebrating with friends, and if you want the story of my birthday-party, stay tuned - I might post about it. *g*

39 felt older to me than 40 does. I don't know why. Maybe because I have the impression that the higher the numbers, the more things are coming together in my life instead of tearing me apart.

Wow. Does it help that I had NO IDEA you were older than 30? I thought you were my age. But then... I look young for my age, and get mistaken for 18 or 20 quite frequently.

I went through the panic of realizing my mortality at 29, so 40 came with little fanfare. Thankfully. I don't think I could have gone through it twice. :-D (And I haven't been carded since I was 16, so go you!)

All I can say was that turning 39 was a lot harder than the big 4-0. It's like you get a fresh new start at that point. Plus, they say 40 is the new 30. :)

I just turned 41, and while I'd like to LOOK 25 again, I wouldn't go back there for the world.

Some things are hard to give up. I certainly don't turn heads like I used to, (although I think I'm holding up fairly well) but I am pretty happy to be where I am right now.

I don't know yet what the transition from 39-40 will be like. I recall my transition from 29-30, with my 29th year being one full of self-doubt and fear followed by a sense of certainty and empowerment that settled on me after 30. I felt, for some reason, like switching that 2 in my age to a 3 gave me more consequence and a recognition of accomplishment.

Here's hoping that the transition from 39-40 is equally positive for you.

Have a wonderful birthday! You can always use my favorite ex-boss's advice. He didn't believe in getting older than 39, so from then on his birthday's were 39-A, 39-B, etc. Last one of his before I stopped working at the insurance co was 39-K.

Don't really have any advice. I still can't get used to turning 40 last autumn; I just try not to think about it. But really, I remember turning 20 was much scarier: "Oh noes! I'm not a kid anymore!!" :P
