The 'Increase Your Vocabulary Snarry-style' Thread

Since my last 'Increase Your Vocabulary' post went over well, I thought I'd do another. This one is Snarry themed, and really all you need to do to participate are post words and their definitions that describe Snape and Harry individually. These words should be fairly uncommon. The whole point of this exercise is to learn new words or maybe pass on some of that superior intellect to your fellow ficcers.

I'll start.

Harry

Impetuous = Characterized by sudden and forceful energy or emotion; impulsive and passionate.

CAPSLOCK!HARRY anyone?

Snape

Aquiline = Curved or hooked like an eagle's beak: an aquiline nose.

I always liked this word to describe Snape's nose. Breaks the monotony of 'hooked' or 'beaky.'

Go to it, folks!

Ha ha -- what does Snape have over his head?

[identity profile] carentan.livejournal.com 2005-07-05 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
They are keychains - I got them at Legoland. Go to my journal and I posted a pic of all of them (subject Harry Potter keychains, I think).

[identity profile] carentan.livejournal.com 2005-07-06 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Legoland is in Carlsbad, Ca. A teensy bit north of San Diego.

My Snape has no nose!
How does he smell?
Greasy.

Harry has no nose either. Let's hope they're not lacking elsewhere :P

Harry:

spasmodic: having abrupt fits of energy or temper

Snape:

opprobrious: scornfully abusive

Snape:

opprobrious: scornfully abusive

That word is perfect for describing Snape's manner.

[identity profile] maelwaedd.livejournal.com 2005-07-05 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
approbation
An expression of warm approval; praise.

Harry craved...

mellifluous
Smooth and sweet: “polite and cordial, with a mellifluous, well-educated voice” (H.W. Crocker III).

The definition is so very Snape--except for the 'polite and cordial' part in some circles. :)

[identity profile] themostepotente.livejournal.com 2005-07-06 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Polite, no. Cordial, sure.

I can see his being cordial with those he respects.

And OMFG, how are you dear?

[identity profile] maelwaedd.livejournal.com 2005-07-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, he would be cordial generally, I imagine, but not with the 'polite and' attached before it. :) I was thinking more of his (fanon or otherwise) voice with the word, to be honest.

I'm crap. Sooo crap. I haven't written anything but a few articles (that I got published, woot!) since, like, Christmas, and I've got this awful cold. You may remember that I'm almost always sick, so it probably shouldn't come as any great surprise, but I'm feeling really crappy right now and I'm tempted to take the afternoon off work.

My life is absolutely fucking brilliant, though. I'm still with the Weasley, my daughter is beautiful and growing and verbose (well, as much as a two year old can be), and I fucking ADORE my job. It's so excellent. So yes, things are pretty bloody nifty with me, except for the being sick and not writing parts. I'm reading a fair few novels, though, on the bus and the like.

I hope you're well and good, yes? I try to keep up with LJ whenever I can, but I get almost no time now that I work full-time so far away from my house.

Harry

Ephemeral = Short lived, fleeting, usually used to describe something lovely that dies quickly.

Peripatetic = aimless, itinerant; one who walks... I've seen it used to describe a traveler's soul and/or to do something without consistancy or regimen, just as the moment takes you.

Contumacious = opposing righful authority, obstinate,

Snape

Saturnine = Morose, gloomy. I've also seen it used to indicate bookish (with heavy influence of morose, gloomy).

Erudite = Deeply read, learned.

Abstemious = Sparing in food or drink (or pleasures, as I've seen it used), temperate, sober.

And, to top it all off...

Contumelious = contemptuous, insolent, proudly rude. ;-)

[identity profile] aimlesscoyote.livejournal.com 2005-07-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooooh! props on "contumacious" and particularly "contumelious." I actually had to look that one up!

I think Snape would agree. *G*

CAPSLOCK!HARRY

Harry:

...
*drawing a blank here* (my inner Snape!muse proposes: "obtuse" and "not nearly obsequious enough") Therefore:

obtuse - Lacking in insight or discernment; Slow to learn or understand; lacking intellectual acuity

obsequious - Attempting to win favor from influential people by flattery; attentive in an ingratiating or servile manner

Snape:

perspicacious: (1) Acutely insightful and wise; (2) Mentally acute or penetratingly discerning.

(Although I would attach this label more to Dumbledore than Snape. Snape!muse won't hear of it. LOL)

Harry

temerarious: reckless, rash

fatuous: foolish, brainless (that's Snape's opinion of Harry, not mine! *g*)

Snape

inexorable: rigidly severe, relentless

mordant: caustic, biting (to describe Snape's sarcasm)
libitina: Wei Yingluo from Story of Yanxi Palace in full fancy costume holding a gaiwan and sipping tea (HP dark textbook (from casira))

[personal profile] libitina 2005-07-06 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know... I think of mordant as it is specifically used in dying... mainly a caustic chemical that will make the dye more brilliant and colorfast... often ammonia... and back in the day derived from pee.

[identity profile] ariadneelda.livejournal.com 2005-07-06 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I know, that's mordant as a noun. But as an adjective it is also used to describe thought, manner, or style, as in "a mordant wit". Perhaps I should have clarified it.

[personal profile] libitina 2005-07-06 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw... it was clearly an adjective. And it still makes me think of pee.

Cause I'm classy.

[identity profile] ariadneelda.livejournal.com 2005-07-06 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

Oh no, I will have a hard time trying to forget the mordant=pee association from now on. And I really liked the sound of that word...

Love corvine. I generally describe Snape's robe as being 'crow-black' in color.

It's a great word, isn't it? I even love to say it... "corvine".
