i think about harry's vault, which was left by his parents. yeah, he was still alive, yeah dumbledore was looking out for him, but he wasn't even in the wizarding world. sirius was technically not dead (though how alive you are in azkaban is anyone's guess). i would imagine his gold would just rot away until he showed up with the key for it.

as fastidious as the goblins are depicted, i can't imagine them handing it over to anyone. especially since sirius had no trial, and therefore it would be pretty hard (legally) for the ministry to seize it.

then again, i have no concept of wizarding laws.
