A friend and I were just discussing this over IM. What are your top ten tabletop games?

10.) Life; So like there's me in my pink plastic car (excuse me, cars plural) filled with kids heading into the poor house. WTF -- can I fucking spin again?

9.) Operation; The ONLY explanation for my having fucked up nerves. Buzzzzzz!

8.) Uno; Draw four MOTHERFUCKAH!

7.) Mille Bournes; It's French. It makes no fucking sense until you've read the directions FIVE times. What's not to love?

6.) Monopoly (LotR edition); Because who wouldn't want to own Rivendell and Lothlorien?

5.) Battleship; I totally used to cheat and move my ships :P

4.) Clue (Too bad there was no HP edition); Snape did it in the Potions lab...with Harry!

3.) Stratego; Fuck chess! I'll bet Ron would be good at this.

2.) Trivial Pursuit; 80's edition fersure! Like totally.

1.) Candyland; Simplistic as fuck but still so cool.

Yeah, Chutes and Ladders, and also, Pictionary. Dude, I can't draw? But I rock at getting people to guess my word in this game.

And Trivial Pursuit, yes, though the husband won't play with me.

Same problem: Scrabble. Husband won't play me *or* Kid One.

Dude. Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble are so tied for my #1. Gee, can you tell I'm a nerd? ;P I love any trivia or word game, really. Teams of Enemies, Balderdash (I'm so leet at sounding like a dictionary), Boggle, etc. Yum.

I'm pro-Scrabble. It's the only game I'm seriously any good at - I used to have a 5 year Monopoly champion streak, but then I met my boyfriend. Bastard.

I'm awful at Trivial Pursuit, but excellent at the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire board game. And PC game. And DVD-based game. Yeah, we're fond of pop trivia in this house.

I love Uno too, and Life. I've only played Life once, but I had the best time. I should really track that down.

And I don't have the mentality for chess, apparently. All attempts to teach me have failed.

Slash pictionary. That's when a bunch of slashers write down all sorts of random things on torn up slips of paper, which may or may not be slashy, then mixes them up, goes out and has lunch and maybe a drink or two, comes back having forgotten all the things they wrote down, then draws them on butcher's paper with crayons or pens you steal from hotels. Non competative - no one keeps score. Everyone laughs until they pee a little. Things like 'brutal sodomy' are compulsory.

Scrabble. I ALWAYS win. And now there's SuperScrabble, with quadruple scores. And, like, 17 Qs and Xs.
Payday! It's got online auctions for ridiculous junk you don't need, just like real life!

"Grandmother comes to visit. Spend $600 extra dollars on groceries." WTF, Grandma? Is it some kind of metabolic disorder??!

And you can play the lottery, and you get lots of bills in the mail, and you can go neck-deep into debt! How can you not love that?!

Pente. It's so ancient and stuff. And harder than fuck to get good at.
Milles Bourne Coup fourre, fucker! *maniacal laughter*
Parcheesi. You can cause a HUGE-ass pileup if you decide not to move your roadblock for awhile. This makes people very angry. aaahahaha!!!
Sequence.I don't know, I just think it's cool that all those playing cards are printed out on the board. And I love poker chips.

x_x Operation. I learned to hate that game when my little nieces got it. They were still too small for such fine tuned movements and the room was constantly filled with BUZZZZZZZ. I think they liked doing that.

My family never got into them all that much, though I was introduced to the five day running Risk games in college, but my m-i-l kept all the board games from when my husband and his sister were ten and we spent this past Christmas playing Aggravation, and Chinese Checkers and Moustrap and Candyland with a set so old that the cards are the texture of felt.

Have you ever played Mousetrap with a three year old? When the game is twenty years old? And is missing pieces? I deserve some kind of award for jury-rigging three missing pieces with four christmas cards, embroidery floss, and cellophane tape.

That being said...Aggravation is right up there with Uno for unearthing hidden competitive streaks.

PIT! Cripes, used to go to a religious private school, cards were banned. We'd play this in the storage closet, flashlights only. It's IMPOSSIBLE to play that game without making a racket, so it added so much to it to play quietly. We only got busted once. *strut*
Moolah - really hard to find game, absolutely fun as hell.
Mad Magazine Game: Where else can you play a game that says if you're poor, switch your places with the dude who's winning.?
Life - only place I'd allow myself to have babies, though babies for profit is a novel idea.
Farming game - grow your crops and lose everything anyway. Beautiful. Damn government!
Stock Ticker
Balderdash - make up definitions to really weird words, then convince people yours is the real definition.

TOO many games! We lived in the mountains, no TV when I was a kid. We had scads of games, still do.

I get INCREDIBLY frustrated by any game where luck has a significant effect on the outcome. So all that stuff where you roll the dice and make your way across the board-- out. Anything where it's about what card s you get dealt-- no way.

Personally, I like Boggle because I destroy the competition. But Trivial Persuit, Taboo, Scattergories (which I've never owned, but was fun the few times I played)-- those are all fun. I like talky games. I like to talk.
