LoTR

Star Trek
X-Men

[livejournal.com profile] cave_canem is making me seriously consider the Buffyverse.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

LotR, Frodo/Sam is my poison. I've written it in the past, though I kind of left it in the dust when HP took over my brain. I still read a fair amount of hobbitslash though.

Also, the first piece of fanfic I wrote was a PotC Mary Sue, but I Do Not Speak of That. ;)

While I've only written for 6 fandoms (HP, Due South, Farscape, Digimon, Buffyverse, and West Wing), I'm not much of a writer. I write maybe a fic a year. Maybe.

But I'm extremely multi-fannish. In the past week I have read HP, Buffyverse, Smallville, Highlander, Sports Night, Due South, Princess Bride, The Sentinel, Stargate, Farscape, Star Wars, etc. To me, hanging out (or writing) in just one fandom would be... wrong. I couldn't do it.

And HP fandom will be around for quite some time. Sure, it won't be as big or as prolific. But considering that people still writing Kirk/Spock slash, or that people still have Sherlock Holmes get-togethers, or that, no, really, there was an LOTR fandom before the films came out...

Yeah. It'll still be here.

I want to branch out into other fandoms in terms of writing. I read a lot of LoTR, LoTRPS, and Sports Night, but I pretty much only write HP. LoTR and LoTRPS are so big and scary that it's hard to find good stuff, and I don't want to write cliches over and over again, but I do want to start writing in other fandoms, definitely.

i feel exactly the opposite, i can't get my head around how big the HP fandom is, while my view on the LOTR fandom is that it's smaller

but that's just because i am part of a smallish group of people who always have a AIM chat together every night...

I'll answer your questions the best that I can.

I do write one other fandom, but have never posted anything online.

Mulder/Krycek got me into slash. Before that I read Mulder/Scully.

As for leaving a fandom, I'm more a reader than a writer but I don't read X-Files fanfiction anymore. Now its just Harry Potter and usually only Harry/Snape.

I think the Harry Potter fandom will go on for a long while. It seems like the communities I have joined are constantly getting new members.

Yep... I write for LotR and Bram Stoker's Dracula (the movie thing), even if it was a while ago I posted anything for them, mostly due to my beta reader doing the disappearing act on me.

In LotR... Hmm, I'm a pervy Elf-fancier, so... Elves! I mostly slash Elves with Elves, even if an Elf/Man has shown up occasionally. But fav pairing... Celeborn/Haldir? or Erestor/Legolas or Erestor/Glorfindel? Ack, now I forgot Elrond. *sends him off to Thranduil* I just love them all, the canon Elves, that is, not the silly fangirl invention of Figwit aka Melpomaen *stabs*

I also have a soft spot for Balrog of Moria/WitchKing of Angmar *cuddles them and is singed to death*

I'm always considering new fandoms *grins* I can get the strangest random ideas. I have this slightly fuzzy plotbunny that pokes me to slash a Wagner opera?! How many would be even the slightest interested in reading that?

I suppose I left LotR behind a bit when I got so involved with the HP rpg... playing two fairly busy characters and modding? Not much time left for other things.

I'm not sure I can really say anything about a fandom I'm not in... To each and everyone according to their tastes.

The HP fandom could last a long time. Even if the last book will be published in 2 years or something like that, the movies are lagging behind. It could be that some people move on to the next fad, like many jumped from LotR to PotC and then to Troy, following a certain skinny actor. But I think a large group of people , hardcore *winks* fans will stay.

Besides the Harry Potter fandom -- do you write for any other fandoms currently?

I wrote two drabbles for "The Princess Bride" last night. I do a Star Trek RP which requires quite a bit of writing...

What ships do you like in other fanverses?

LoTR: Aragorn/Eowyn/Faramir
Troy: Hector/anyone
PotC: Jack/anyone
BtVS: Spike/Dawn; Xander/Willow; Oz/Willow; Faith/anyone; Darla/Drusilla
ST: J/C; J/7
TPM: DM/anyone
X-Men: Rogue/Gambit OTP
XMM: Rogue/Wolverine
Princess Bride: Westley/Inigo
Endless: any of the Endless/anyone in any fandom

I know there are more. These are just what popped into my head.

Or perhaps you left another fandom to come to Harry Potter?

I was into the Buffyverse heavily before discovering HP fandom. Never wrote for it though...

Do you consider some of the fandoms to be flash in the pans?

Definitely. Quite a few fandoms die out very quickly, though most are resurrected later in a resurgence created by a rerelease in the media.

And lastly, how long do you foresee the Harry Potter fandom lasting?

I think HP fandom will be very long lasting. We've got two novels left to go plus some, and there are films, spinoffs, merchandise... Not to mention, what I'm seeing as a young adult, people ten years younger are seeing as a preteen. This will probably be their first fandom, and they'll always have a soft spot toward it.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

I think it's very possible to be a multifan. I have a broad spectrum of interests, and while I really only write HP in any depth, I think having more than one fandom is not a bad thing. Limiting yourself to a single fandom can narrow your ability to think outside the box. Exploring other fandoms often opens up new possibilities, and that enriches all the fandoms you're involved in.

My first fandom was The X-Files. Though I don't participate since the series ended, I know the fandom is still alive and well as I still get an email now and then about stories I've written for TXF. This is the third fandom I've written for, unless you count the limericks, because then I've done LotR, PotC, QL, Buffy, Totally Spies, X-Men, Star Trek and probably some other things I've already forgotten about. But as for fics, Juxtapose Fantasy, TXF, and HP. :)

I should think most book series fandoms could outlast television ones easily, and I would foresee the HP fandom surviving well past the conclusion of the series, both in print and film.

My first fandom was LotR. I don't focus so much on ships as I do on characters, and I read mostly fics involving Boromir, Faramir, Aragorn, Eowyn, Arwen, Elladan and Elrohir, (not as a couple though), or miscellaneous elves. I used to read Legolas, but the fangirls pretty much killed that one dead.

I also got into:
The Mummy (never written anything) where I read pretty much anything that didn't involve Rick. Evey/Imhotep, Evey/Ardeth Bey, and some that involved OFCs. Not the posh-est fandom, but...
Troy (never seen the movie though): my ships are Hector/Paris or Hector/Paris/Helen.
Labyrinth: Sarah/Jareth (not that there's much else you can get out of it. Anyone who has written Sarah/Hoggle deserves to be voted out of the gene pool now.)
Star Wars: Padme/Obi Wan
X-Men: Wolverine/Rogue, though I've read some Scott/Jean.

How long will HP last? I don't know...I can only hope that it stays interesting a good while longer. As for flash in the pans, I can't say for certain. I don't pay much attention, if any, to the fandoms other than those listed above. I've dipped a toe into Peter Pan (Hook/Wendy) and PotC, but I don't think I've ever read a whole full-length fic in either fandom. I'd actually like to read some good PotC, but ff.net is chin-deep in craptastic fic, and I gave up.

Is it ok if I substitute "Draw for" as oppossed to write in?
I do fanart for, Violinist of Hameln, Peace Maker Kurogane, X-Universe, Babylon 5, Books of Magic Universe, Lord of the Rings, and the random fantasy Novle.

What ships do you like in other fanverses?
Violinist of Hameln: Hamel/Flute (canon); Riael/Sizer (canon); Clari/Lute (non-c); Hamel/Raiel (non-c); Vocal/Orgel (non con only) Chestra/Vocal (non-con only)

Peace Maker Kurogane: Hijikata/Okita (implied in the story and historically as well) Tatsu/Susumu

X-universe: Shadowcat/Collosus Iceman/Northstar Shadowcat/Magic Wolfsbane/Cypher

Babylon 5 -N/A

Books of Magic N/A

LotR . . . Uhh Aragorn/Arwen! Merry/Pippen, Sam/Rosie sooo not into Frodo/Sam -_-

Have you considered trying your hand at writing for another fandom?
yes, actually, the reason I was known in the Violinist of Hameln fandom was for my fanfics, not my fanart =P (that fandom cared not about betas and grammar *L*)

Or perhaps you left another fandom to come to Harry Potter?
Left the VoH one, but I'm coming back to it. It was partially for Harry Potter and partially because of massive wank -_-

Do you consider some of the fandoms to be flash in the pans?
Peace Maker Kurogane might be, we'll see. Star Wars was *L* See, I didn't even list it!

And lastly, how long do you foresee the Harry Potter fandom lasting?
A few years past the last book if it follows like other fandoms I've been in. I think it might be like Star Trek though, with the hard Core fans lasting forever but the mass popularity not outlasting the last book by much.

I deleted my original reply because I misundertood one of the questions.

Besides the Harry Potter fandom -- do you write for any other fandoms currently?

I'm a relative newbie to HP so I haven't written a HP fic yet. I like feeling my way around before I attempt writing. It usually takes me a few months before I feel comfortable enough to write in any fandom.

I'm juggling two fandoms right now: HP and popslash. It's been over a year since I've written a popslash fic so no, I'm not currently writing in that fandom.

What ships do you like in other fanverses?

Popslash - Lance/Chris
Queer as Folk US - Brian/Justin
Smallville - Lex/Clark
Roswell - Michael/Maria (my first fandom and my first OTP)

Have you considered trying your hand at writing for another fandom?

I've written for other fandoms in the past -- Roswell, Smallville and Queer as Folk US. Besides HP, I can't think of any fandom I'd like to write in. I don't normally write in more than one fandom at a time.

Or perhaps you left another fandom to come to Harry Potter?

I haven't left the popslash fandom but it's not taking up a majority of my fannish time anymore. I'm splitting my time between popslash and HP.

And lastly, how long do you foresee the Harry Potter fandom lasting?

Given the massive popularity and broad appeal of the books, HP could be one of those fandoms that never dies. It'll just keep going and going and going. Like the Energizer bunny. *g*

Right now I'm dabbling with a Sports Night/Six Feet Under crossover fic that is kind of eating my brain. I'm hoping to jump into some CSI: fic soon.

In all my fandoms, if I even consider writing, it's pretty much all slash all the way. In SN, it's Dan/Casey, but now and then I feel compelled to write a couple of the canon het pairings. Though I wouldn't reall call myself a shipper there.

HP fanfic will be around for a long time I think. I do think that fandoms ebb and flow. I don't see nearly as much PotC fic around as I used to, and the OUATiM fic has started to peter out, but the writers who are really dedicated to a fandom will keep writing in it no matter what. And I think that's what makes fandom great.

Now, off to indulge in more BDS, so hopefully I can aquire a Connor/Murphy muse.

I read a gazillion fandoms (basically, I'll read anything), though my time has been limited for the past year so these days, reading is mostly HP, with a smattering of Highlander, Star Trek (DS9 & Voyager), Star Wars: ANH, PotC, LotR, HH, and popslash when someone recs something. I'm always open to interesting recs though, no matter what the fandom.

I've written seriously in 5 different fandoms (Stargate, Brimstone, Highlander, Sentinel, HP) dabbled in 3 others (BtVS, Witchblade, Dark Angel) and am still actively writing in 3 of the fandoms, though mostly just in HP cuz of time limitations these days.

My flash in the pan fandom was TPM. I lasted about 3 weeks before I got bored and wandered away.

I can see HP lasting quite a while. Definitely until the end of the series. Lots of stories I want to tell in that universe and lots of universe to explore. :-)

I write a series with my girlfriend in the Smallville fandom. CLex? Is like crack. Once you're hooked, you're hooked for life. Bald playboy billionares, shy farm boys, and lots of smutty looks of adoration? Yeah. OH yeah.

As for how long the HP fandom is going to last, I almost want to compare it to Tolkien, but it's not really a proper comparison, since the HP movies are being made as JKR writes the books. So...I'm gonna say that the HP fandom will be around for another good ten/fifteen years for our generation of slashers, and probably another ten after that for the kiddies who weren't allowed to read it or jus't didnt as children and pick it up as teens. Don't know why I think so, just do :)

I started out writing Final Fantasy 7 (it's an RPG video game on PSOne, if you didn't know) and I'm still on-off writing for it, so I never left it or anything. I just seem to spend more time in the HP fandom, because it's larger and more organized and some of the fic is amazingly good. FF7 lacks great fic, I'd like to think I'm one of the better writers in that fandom, but that may only be because most of the stuff is half-arsed shite posted on FF.net (I post on FF.net too, but some of the fiction there just pains me).

I see the HP fandom lasting a very long time. I suppose certain things will remain open even after we've got all the books and the possible 8th extra book, so there'll be something to discuss and fics to write, definitely. There'll be dry seasons in the future, but new fans will constantly show up and they'll want to write fic and read fic and discuss.
