That is the question, folks!

When writing anal scenes (and no, this is NOT limited to male/male slash), do you prefer a nice lubrication spell, or does your preference run with something more creative in the way of commercial lubricants?

What's the strangest item you've used as a substitute for a lubricant?

Have you ever written fics with lubricated condoms?

Have you ever written fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario?

Finally, anything else you'd like to add on the topic?

Let's hear what you have to say!

I'd have linked you to [livejournal.com profile] percy_weatherby's definitive post on the subject, but someone above did it already.

As a fanartist, I've never drawn a lubrication spell...

As a reader, I don't care if there are well-written lubricatioin spells, but I have a preference for creative lubricants, as long as they're not sweet-flavored, eurgh. But that's a personal squick of mine, just can't imagine sex tasting like sugar... ;)

Lubrication spells are actually my least favourite thing about HP fandom. I think fingering is sexy as hell, and a nice, slow stretching makes for good foreplay.

I don't write much, but suncreen lotion is definately the weirdest and possibly most impractical.

I never mention condom use, b/c I don't find them especially necessary for fiction.

I don't go in for non-con at all.

Final thought: I also find it extremely wince-worthy when no mention is made about lube at all. It draws me out of the story b/c I start to wonder if the author really knows how the whole anal thing works.

I totally agree with the people who've already said that they aren't huge fans of lubrication spells. I don't mind them--I sort of read right over them as I'm reading fic, usually--but they just don't have that little surprising slantwise twist that canon Potterverse magic usually has. I think [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion had a fabulous essay about this a while back.

That being said, I was rather proud of myself when I wrote an actual anal scene not long ago (Harry/Draco with Polyjuice for [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies and I had them transfigure saliva into something a little more suitable. ;)

lubrication?

I don't like spells at all.  Thanks, but no thanks.  Just not very intimate.  The weirdest thing I've used so far for lubricant was butter, but they were shagging on the dinner table at the time, so it made perfect sense.  ;-)  I've written a seeming non-con with no lubrication, and I made certain that the top noticed that it was fairly painful at first.

Wow, I'd never realized how opposed some people are to lubrication spells. Admittedly, I've read some awful sex scenes that use them, but then, I've also read awful sex scenes that use commercial lubricants.

In my own writing, I mostly use unspecified lotions, kept in jars or bottles (tubes of lubricant don't seem appropriate to the wizarding world). I've only used lubrication charms in one story that I can remember, and mentioned them without using them in another, but I'm open to the possibility that I might use them again; it all depends on the situation.

I think that boys in a dormitory, for instance, would prefer to use some method of lubrication that wouldn't be stored with the rest of their belongings, where it might be discovered and result in a lot of teasing. And, of course, lubrication spells come in handy when the characters are in a hurry...or find themselves without lube...or are trying to conceal the fact that the person they're reluctantly raping in front of an audience of Death Eaters has had any form of preparation.

As to the other questions, I'm so vanilla I scare myself: I've never written a substitute for lubricant; I don't use condoms in HP fic; and anytime there's anal penetration in my fics, there's lube.

Heh, good question. A little thinking resulted in this: I prefer and use lubrication spells when the characters are in a hurry or I want it to emphasize the lack of emotions. Lubrication - I read and write Snape, so it's always selfmade ;) - is for play. I don't think I have written anything that qualifies as strange lube.

Yes, I have written no-lube, but that was non-con (and Voldemort's two snake-cocks weren't very thick).

No condoms - they bore me.

Scented lubes bother me. I like perfume, but the concept of "Wow, your arse smells like Christmas" is just ick. Flavoured and tingling/itching/whatever lubes on the other hand is quite a preference of mine if the lube is to be mentioned in more than passing.

Re #3. I don't mind reading no lube sex so long as it's depicted realistically. Nothing will make me hit the back button quicker than no lube and yet it slides right in. If there's no lube, there's going to be a lot more shoving and working it in, and it's also probably going to be less comfortable for the top as well as the bottom.

As far as strange substitutes for lube...THUS far, the oddest thing I've used is blood. Or chocolate. They're both pretty odd, LOL! BUT, one of the ones I'm writing right now...is...significantly odder. But I shan't spoil it.

Blood is good -- especially if you are a bloodplay whore like I am :-)

Never tried that before though.

I really dislike lubrication spells. Usually I have them accio something. Probably the oddest thing was olive oil.

I'm not real keen on lubrication spells either.

Olive oil? What was the pairing? I'm guessing Snape was one-half.

Oh, I really like lubrication spells!!! They're so handy! No need to carry pots or tubes around, and everyone seems to have their wands about them most of the time... *shrugs* I think lubrication spells are actually more realistic in Potterverse. Why bother with K-Y and potions (when you're in a hurry or not looking for something different, that is _ some potions could have special nice effects...) if you knew a simple spell that made your fingers instantly slick? Or the arse, or the cock... Whatever you picked. No lack of imagination there, I say.

yay for Lubrication spells!!!

I actually like Lubrication spells, a lot. I think it's because I love the spells in the books, and I often wonder about the many sex spells wizards must know! It seems so handy_ no need to carry pots and tubes around, all you need is your wand, and if you're a wizard or a witch you'll probably have it on you already.Really, if you knew a magical word that would instantly make your fingers slick and slippery (or the arse... or the cock... no lack of imagination, there!) would you bother with K-Y or potions in a daily basis?
I think wizards would probably use potions when they wanted special effects or ingredients, but I bet the Lubrication spell is super popular in Hogwarts and in most wizarding homes!

Wow

I had no idea so many people loathed lubrication spells. I enjoy combining lubricious Latin words to make them up, myself. Though I would agree Snape would probably create his own custom substance.

Personally, I hate lubrication spells. I don't quite know why, but I have a feeling it might be because it smacks of a convenience spell. As in "oh, I can't be bothered to think up anything realistic, so I'll use a spell!" Blargh.
Another explanation might be that I write mostly Snape pairings, and I think his professional pride forbids him to use something as low as a lubrication spell.

Strangest lube I've used in a fic? In FPS, bowstring wax. In RPS, honey.

Fics with lubricated condoms? RPS, yes; FPS, no.

Fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario? Yes, but it was a gift fic not published online. The scenario was non-con, but were I to write non-con again, I would likely write in some form of lubricant.

Lastly, I'm going to second [livejournal.com profile] prillalar's comment about the unsexiness of the word "lube". If there's one word that makes me fall out of a smutfic, it's that one.

>i>lubrication spells

Er, right now I don't remember if I've ever written something where they use a spell. It's probably because I'm a little hungover and tired, so I'll just skip to the next qustions ;)

What's the strangest item you've used as a substitute for a lubricant?

Uhm, I think it must be Vaseline, but that was because I read in a book by Jean Genet that he'd used it. Besides it was Lupin who used it in the fic and since he's half-blood I don't think it was that much OC.

Have you ever written fics with lubricated condoms?

No

Have you ever written fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario?

In the BE-FQF entry "The Tournament" I'm hinting at it, and in the andropotterist/hunkwarts crossover "The best whorehouse in the West" I'm also hinting at it. And I'm planning to write one where it's more explicit shown.

Finally, anything else you'd like to add on the topic?

The worst analsex-scene I've ever read must be a story where Hermione is penetrated by both Sirius (vagina) and Snape (anal) and she doesn't feel any pain at all, and it just slides in without any problems, even though they haven't used any lubrication at all. That really annoyed me ^-^
