Merlin Thinky Thoughts and a Poll

So, I feel as though I've let the Merlin people on my flist down a bit. I don't post a lot about Merlin, but after the holidays, I aim to make this journal WAY more Merlin friendly. I say this because I REFUSE to be so late with my hd_holidays fic like I was last year. And I am a glaciarly slow writer :-(

I have been talking with a dear friend about a Merlin collab for next year, and the Gods be damned, I *will* finish this M/A ponyplay fic. If I felt more comfortable, I'd give B/C a go, but that will come in time, I imagine. Inspired by ella_bane's fun poll today, I bring you one of my own out of selfish curiosity. Have fun :-)

I love both Bradley and Colin, though in different ways. Colin is adorable, but I'm not sexually attracted to him. Bradley on the other hand... :)

I only watch the show so really my answer is only semi-useful. I based my votes on how I feel about them when I watch the show and how I totally ship them in my head. I am just not involved in the fandom.

I like Arthur topping but it depends on the fic. I love when there are reasons give for why Arthur bottoms/Merlin tops and I can believe it readily. But when no explanation is given and Arthur is portrayed as a princely and Merlin very much the servant, I find Merlin topping hard to read.

Agreed. Explanation is necessary for me given their stations in life. Merlin topping Arthur is not going to work for me in a PWP setting.

I have an opinion that is not represented on your poll; let me share it with you. :-)

I prefer Merlin topping Arthur, but it's not an absolute preference; a little variety makes me happier than all top!Merlin all the time would. Ideally, I'd like around a 60-40 split.

One of my favorite things about Merlin's and Arthur's relationship is how it transcends their roles: they become friends even though Arthur is a prince and Merlin a servant. Accordingly, I'm not very fond of stories in which the characters blithely assume that of course Merlin will bottom for Arthur, and in which Merlin proceeds to do so forever.

(On the other hand, I love stories in which Arthur makes that particular assumption and Merlin either 1) smacks him upside the head for being an entitled prat, or 2) says, "All right, if you're going to make such a fuss over it. I kind of prefer being on the bottom anyway.")

I'm not sure if that's the entire reason I prefer Merlin topping Arthur--sometimes pairings just resonate for you a certain way, you know?--but it's certainly a large part of it.

Somewhere else today someone asked me the question: Bradley or Colin.

My response: Colin and I would spend loads of time doing naughty things to each other but then we would hang out at the pub with Bradley where he would give me the lowdown and gossip and let me just bask in the infectious happiness that is his laugh while Colin sits between us with his arms around both of our shoulders. A nice snug threesome. XD

But Colin is so my type! But Bradley makes me happy and would so be my BFF!

As for fic, I like the pairings equally when done realistically. The porn is okay if it's fused with a good story, good characterization and the boys how I like them.

I've never had a preference for Tops and Bottoms in any other fandoms. But I dunno, something about Merlin and Arthur just makes me want Merlin to be the bottom. O_O

That's not to say I don't still like it the other way around. Porn is porn. XD

I prefer Merlin bottom as well given their stations, but I'd read a well-written bottom!Arthur fic. I'd need a convincing explanation, though.
