[Retro Rec]

The Gnostic Crane - Harry/Draco, hazy Harry/Remus, implied Remus/Tonks, past Remus/Snape, past implied Remus/Sirius [R] by [livejournal.com profile] rinsbane.

I miss writerly experimentation. You don't see as much of it in fandom anymore. Wordsmithing used to be very popular and one of my favourite styles. It's pretty much extinct now. I enjoy reading stories in all sorts of narratives, and I'm one of those rare few that favours present tense when writing shorter pieces. I guess that's why this story has always stuck out in my mind. It's the first and possibly only (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here) fic I've seen in the future tense. When I first read this fic, part of me wondered whether or not Harry didn't imagine this entire scenario, given the uncertainty of the future, and I enjoyed watching the events unfold. Rinsbane was mostly a Snarry shipper, but this is one of her most unique fics, and I'm happy to report it's between Mr Potter and Mr Malfoy. That magnetic push-pull between Harry and Draco is absolutely essential for me, and Rinsbane delivers this dynamic in spades. The tension is palpable when Draco is taken into custody and brought to Grimmauld Place during the war. Sectumsempra has become one of the Dark Lord's greatest warring tools, and Draco's expected to spill Snape's location and with it, the counter-curse. A word of warning, though. There are brief flirtations with other pairings in this fic, but the focus never veers from Harry and Draco. TGC marks the first in a series of retro recs from writers I dearly miss. If you are looking for something different, then might I suggest something very different? You won't be disappointed.

[Sleeper Rec]

Letter to a Young Death Eater - Abraxas Malfoy, Severus Snape [PG] by [livejournal.com profile] chantefable.

I've always thought a Malfoy would be responsible for Snape's induction into the Death Eaters. And while I need absolutely no convincing that Lucius could seduce Snape physically, I'm rather sold on the idea that Abraxas could seduce Snape metaphysically. Apart from the one or two lines we're given about Abraxas Malfoy in canon, we know next to nothing about him. Yet, I have no problem in seeing his somewhat fatherly influence in the letter he pens to Snape in reference to the sides of light and dark. Abraxas is so thoroughly believable in his machinations, that there isn't a trace of blood prejudice to be found. In fact, he is quite Machiavellian in that there is nothing at all to deter Snape from making the obvious choice. Ah, Malfoys were made for politicking just as much as they were for, well…being beautiful, arrogant men.

I miss writerly experimentation. You don't see as much of it in fandom anymore. Wordsmithing used to be very popular and one of my favourite styles. It's pretty much extinct now.

I think unusual tenses, sentence constructions, etc. tend to get regarded these days as pretentious, unnecessarily fancy, or covering up for lack of good narrative with experimental structure. I wouldn't dare to write such a thing for fear of the scoffing or negative reaction. I suppose you could argue that if the story is good enough it wouldn't have that problem, although otoh you could still get comments like "this would be a good story if only you hadn't laden it with this silly contrivance."

I've always found the negative attitudes regarding unusual stylisation to be complete and utter bullshit. Cover-up, my arse.

If you have something to write and your muse calls for second person, present tense, write it. *I* will read it.

I don't mind second person or present tense, used on the right story (fine for some shorts; would probably get wearisome on a novel-length). Some people have kneejerk reactions against them, I think, but it can have a very "this is happening now and you're in the middle of it" feeling which is sometimes appropriate.

I love the idea of the "retro rec." I have a hard enough time finding older fic in my usual pairings (Minerva and the older women); I just have no chance at all of finding good "retro" things outside my usual stomping grounds. So this rec was welcome and refreshing. Thanks!

There are more retro recs to come, dear. And ooh, I just recced your Snape/McG drabbles. I really loved them. I still need to read your femgenficathon fic, too :-)

Thanks SO much for the rec on "Times is Too Slow For Those Who Wait." Thrills me hugely when somebody does that on a piece of my art. Makes my whole day. :)
