[Ficses]
The Boy Who Lived - gen with Harry, Snape and Albus Dumbledore [Teen] by
atdelphi.
This rec is a week old, and I'm certain that most of you have seen this already, but if by the odd chance you haven't, then I highly recommend having a look.
Delphi's mostly responsible for getting me into Snape rarepairs; Snape/Dumbledore, Snape/Moody and Snape/Filch. These are pairings I trust in the hands of a very select few, namely for reasons of interest and appeal. But somehow, she manages to make me love what I might otherwise snub. No truer testament of skill exists.
For her first Help Haiti fic, Delphi delivers a short, sharp gen piece that links four individuals (one undisclosed until the end) on the importance of names and being named.
All right, I'm predictable. Snape's section is my favourite, because we learn the root of his given name. But the other sections are just as striking in their own right. The whole fic is just rich with memorable lines, and honestly, I could cut and paste the whole damned thing as proof, but BwL needs to be savoured whole and brand spankin' new to the eyes.
The last section, though, is what really defines this fic for me, and I love that Delphi's dipped into a whole new genre of characters with her incredible skills. This fic is just a huge thumbs up from me.
No Room for the Weak - Eileen, Severus and Harry [PG] by
perverse_idyll.
It's not often that P.I. posts fic. (Although, one could argue that her thoughtful commentaries are fic enough.) But when she does, she never fails to pull out all the stops. So, imagine my surprise at seeing her name in the Severus Shorts' vis list, a fest in which I had already taken a strong liking to.
I've always loved and even aspired to Idyll's thoroughness. Everything is painstakingly planned to the letter, pre-meditated and enacted like the perfect crime, with just the right amount of detail. And while I love her Snape/Harry, seeing her smithcraft gen is an obscene pleasure.
Some of my favourite HP characters, Regulus, Salazar, and in this case, Eileen Prince, are the ones Rowling barely acknowledges with a pail and shovel in her immense sandbox. P.I.'s Eileen is about as canon as she comes for me. Widowed and miserably fixed at Severus's boyhood home, she plays host to Harry Potter, who's come calling to find out more about his former prof.
Why do I love this Eileen so much, you ask? Well, besides being brilliantly characterised, she's devious, more than a bit caustic and still fiercely protective of her dead son. She's also constantly at odds with wanting to cater to Harry's every whim and wanting to punt him to the furthest side of Spinner's End. All in the name of information exchange, and that's when the real mystery begins. Clearly, not an ending I was ever expecting, and once again I must laud her impeccable genius.
