How grateful am I that someone pointed me in the direction of
severus_shorts? Folks, the fics here are wonderful, and the longest fic I've read was barely over 5k. There's an undeniable treasure trove here with quick, beautiful reads. It's definitely worth the time and attention.
The Janus Rose - Snape/Sprout [G] by Mystery Author.
Now before you go balking at the pairing, at least hear me out. My dearest and discriminating readers, this is a beautiful story. Beautiful spelt with all caps and a fair amount of exclamations following.
The story begins with Pomona Sprout first noticing Snape in Herbology. The author describes his accent as flat and Northern, and I love when Snape's given somewhat of a birthplace based on the author's assessment of his language and mannerisms. Young Severus refers to his mother as 'mam' and addresses Pomona as 'miss' and he's excitable down to the dullest digs in the dirt. When his mother sends him jasmine, he's caught after hours en route to plant it in the secret garden he's found, and that's when this lovely friendship takes hold. This fic was just an unexpected joy for me. Very highly recommended.
Masters and Friends - Snape gen [G] by Mystery Author.
Another beautiful treasure, and this written in less than 3,000 words. Ever the dedicated dualist, Severus attends two birthdays in his honour; one for the side of light, the other for the side of dark. Snape's visit with Dumbles is, as always, quirky and loving yet menacing with the dark cloud of duty as he contemplates the next affair. This fic portrays a very different feeling for Snape as he considers his friends of times past and the dark soldiers they've become. I've never seen a sympathetic approach where Death Eaters are concerned, and I found the bold change refreshing.
The Winning Move - Snape/Luna, Snape/Harry and Snape/Lily [R] by Mystery Author.
Three lovely vignettes, each with Snape in a different relationship and lovingly punctuated with tabletop games. I've never been much of a Snape/Luna fan, but I found their debating Scrabble technicalities charming and hard to resist. Likewise, there are playful and bittersweet scenes with Harry and Lily respectively. Games are how Severus chooses to celebrate his birthdays, and I loved their subtle significances before the fic diverts to the cold, harsh reality of the present. As always, I am in awe of anyone that can tell such a lush story in as few words as possible, and this is a brilliant telling of 'what ifs' and 'what-could-have-beens.'
And because I'm a right, forgettable arse, I haven't yet mentioned the wonderful Snarry drabble
snarkyscorp lovingly penned for me.
Flip - Snape/Harry [R].
Please tell her she needs to write MOAR Snarry. Yesyesyes! *nods enthusiastically*
Enjoy all!

Date: 2010-01-20 09:18 pm (UTC)I love this particular detail so much you might almost call it a kink, lol. (I've had him use "mam" too, as it just seems to feel right.) I tend to flail when people give Severus accent details so I will probably give this a shot even though I was initially put off by the pairing, yes. ty!
