GRRM's 'A Game of Thrones' Casting for HBO

The Starks look pretty awesome, save for Catelyn who looks a little like Joan Cusack to me. But Cersei and Jaime? ALL WRONG. Fuck you very much for ruining my pretteh canon incest :P

What does everyone else think of the casting?

Love them all. They seem to be terrific actors and I love most of them in terms of how they look compared to my mental image. OKay, Sandor seems a bit old, but he's hot and he's got this sexxxxxxy scottish accent so i don't mind.

Sandor Clegane is another one I had a big issue with. Doesn't fit my image at all.

Been following it for months on winter-is-coming.blogspot.com. I'm pretty impressed- perhaps some people are a little too pretty (especially compared to some of HBO's series, The Wire in particular) but so be it.

Particularly looking forward to Peter Dinklage and Jennifer Ehle. And I'll wait until I see Lena and Nikolai all blonded up before passing judgement on their similarity...

Peter Dinklage, yes. He's PERFECT. But Nikolaj whatshisface's features are way too hard to properly pull off Jaime. I suspect I'm more than a bit biased, too. Jaime is my favourite character.

I'm kind of upset with Sean Bean as Ned. I mean, I get it's fantastic casting, but I like Sean Bean, and I don't like Ned at all.

I think a lot of things are possible with good lighting, make-up and acting. But I think I probably thought of Jaime as the post-GoT Jaime where being pretty is suddenly not his main point. Now, if they got a hard-looking Loras...

Date: 2009-10-24 08:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] themostepotente.livejournal.com
Well, on the bright side, Ned isn't around very long. Me, I could give or take him. With the exception of Sansa, the Starks are not my faves.

Speaking of Loras, did you perchance catch that picture of him I recced by Ponderosa? OMG SO PRETTEH!

I'm very happy with all of them, particularly Nicolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime. He's a brilliant actor and I'd rather have someone who can pull off the part than a vapid pretty boy in the role. Besides, he's dead sexy.

Jaime is my favourite character, so I can't help but be very disappointed. I think this guy's features are way too rough to pull off Jaime.

I wish the artist that drew the Jaime in my icon was still about, but he/she took their site down ages ago. That's how I see Jaime. Softer features. Regal looking.

Also, ha ha The Great Pumpkin FTW!

Oh, believe me, Jaime is one of my fave characters too. I just finished re-reading the entire series again last night. I love Nicolaj Coster-Waldau in general and so am really excited to see what he can do with the role. He's not conventionally PRETTY but he's hardly ugly, and believe me, the man has serious sex appeal. If you can find any episodes of New Amsterdam (short lived Fox series he did about a year ago), check it out. He's also sexy and funny in The Baker (a film he did with Damian Lewis) but it's harder to find since it hasn't been released in North America yet.

Jaime doesn't stay pretty for that long either so it doesn't bother me that much. I'm a little more concerned about Lena Headey since I've never seen her in anything, but she is very pretty, so I'm assuming the makeup dept will make them both the gorgeous golden twins we know and love/hate.

Overall, the casting has got me really excited. There's honestly no one who makes me cringe (unlike David Thewlis as Remus for example). The hardest roles are going to be the kids, esp since they're unknowns.

You're right. He doesn't stay pretty for very long. My poor one-handed woobie. Oh, I'm sure you've seen Lena Headley in something. The Sarah Connor Chronicles, perhaps? Or 300? She's very pretty, I guess she just doesn't fit my image at all. But, to be fair, I said that about Michael Gambon, and I think he made a MUCH better Dumbledore than Richard Harris, so we shall see :-)

David Thewlis was just AWFUL for Remus. I actually lost interest in Lupin for a while after PoA.

I THINK HE SHOUOLD GET BACK TO WRITING THE FUCKING BOOKS. NINE YEARS.

NINE YEARS.

FINISH THE BOOK! FINISH IT!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Also, posts such as this just... make me uncomfortable, and so I haven't really been on the blog.

OMG. YES. THIS.

GOD, HAS IT REALLY BEEN NINE YEARS SINCE HE STARTED?!?! WOW. At least FOUR since he finished AFFC.

What made you uncomfortable? The mentioning of the sex?

Also, is Jason Momoa from SGA playing Khal Drogo?

Oh, not the mentioning of sex so much as all of these men agreeing that yes, the sex scenes were very important, and Dany's actress being cast on that criterion, when... Well. That's hardly a major part of her character in the scheme of things, is it?

Also, is Jason Momoa from SGA playing Khal Drogo?

I believe so -- and I note (it's in the most recent post on [livejournal.com profile] grrm) that there is no discussion of how amazing his sex scenes are, and that's a much greater proportion of Drogo's character than it is of Dany's ;)

IDK. I hope that it's entirely unfounded, but it just gave me the impression of the guys doing the casting being these old men with a perpetual "hurr... boobies" and... I don't want to think of [livejournal.com profile] grrm like that, so I'm staying away from his blog :\

Date: 2009-10-22 11:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] themostepotente.livejournal.com
No, it totally is not. After Drogo dies (should I be warning for spoilers in this thread? LOL), it's not about sex AT ALL. But hey, maybe we'll get some Jason peen for our troubles. Were you an SGA fan at all?

But... I think I just read he's at the 1,100 mark with A Dance with Dragons. That's at least something to cheer about?

Yeah, didn't he say that exact same thing about four years ago..? I'll believe it when I see it in print. On paper. In my hands.

Four years ago he was at 1,000 pages. Do pay attention, doll :P

Also, totally unrelated to this thread... I have started watching SGA from season one again. This is all your fault. I now crave Steve/John, Bob/John and Michael/John fic :P

I need a Wraith icon, dammit!

They also cast Khal Drogo and he is also perfect.

Idk, I knew that almost none could match my mental image of the characters so I sort of created a new folder for tv verse XD a bit like with the HP movies. So far I'm really pleased, most of the cast, while not being the spitting image of my "design" for the characters, seems to give off the right vibes. The only thing that left me a bit taken aback was casting Lena Headey as Cersei, because my pal [livejournal.com profile] misstopia made such a good case for her as the perfect Catelyn casting. But I guess she wanted to change from the stark (ha!), determined mother of TSC and go for more ambiguity - while probably the casting people decided to "twinfy" Jaime and Cersei by giving her a sharper/more androgynous look instead of softening him.

If you want more tl;dr, I wrote down some other casting reaction back in August (http://pojypojy.livejournal.com/260913.html#cutid1).

Actually, I'm very pleased with like 90 percent of the casting. It's that 10 percent (my favourite characters, of course :P) that's bothering me; Jaime, Cersei, Sandor and Theon. I pretty much love everyone else. I am curious to see once they progress to the next book who they cast as Littlefinger. He's another favourite of mine.

I voted for Cate Blanchett for Cersei, but then I have a MAJOR crush on her. Plus, she's a terrific actress. And if they can cast Sean Bean, why not her?

Totally bookmarked your post. I love to read other peoples' thoughts on the casting :-)

I think it's great and I'm excited! Jason Momoa as Drogo, well, I think he's too hot for that part but I don't care, because yum. I love the look of all the Stark kids and Peter Dinklage as Tyrion is fucking brilliant.

I'm still remaining pretty upbeat, despite some of the actors not quite matching my image of them; but then, when it comes to the marriage of ASoIaF and HBO, I remain with pretty high hopes. :D

I KNOW RIGHT?? That would be so frustrating!

HEEEE - it totally could be! It's actually a joke from a chat log with friends watching the HBO series Band of Brothers - Simon Pegg (played Shaun in 'Shaun of the Dead') was in the series for a couple eps and we kept calling him Shaun. OMG long, complicated and boring explanation of an injoke, ahahahaha! <3 <3 <3 you. XD

But speaking of, I should find myself a Psyche icon. That show is so cute. XD

I'm really excited. Particularly about Tyrion - I've seen him in a couple of other movies and he's an amazing actor. Theon looks perfect to me, as do most of the Starks.

Jaime and Cersei are very harsh-looking, but both of them are very attractive... just not sure how they'd look blond, which is kind of important plot-wise.

And the Rome town crier guy as Illyrio? AWESOME.

You do realise it was you and Julie who got me into ASoIaF? I still have all of the icons you made from Amok's art.

I Love Jennifer Ehle. She's such a talented actress with a voice to die for. She was in the BBC's award winning 1995 version of Pride and Predjudice with Colin Firth.

Rock o HBO for having so many UK actors.

Date: 2009-10-23 07:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com
I actually think that casting a majority of UK based actors was part of the deal for getting the authorization to shoot in Northern Ireland... I think it's a coproduction or something, a bit like Rome that was an US/UK joint venture. Except that it was shot in Italy and we barely even saw it here, but that's another can of worms XD

I find this thread really interesting, because I'm really nonvisual so I didn't really have an internal picture of what they all looked like? I'm fascinated by/jealous of artistic people who can actually, like, have a picture of a face in their heads when they're reading. Must be a very different experience.

Mostly, I'm so thrilled over Peter Dinklage that I don't care about the rest of it anyway. :) I heart him and I heart his character, so, yay! (I'm not quite done with book 1 at the moment though, so that may change)

Oh man, Goosey, this thread is full of spoilers. All by me, too. I hope I didn't wreck anything for you.

And boy do I envy you. I am a slow reader, but I read this series faster than any other fantasy series. I just could not put them down, and they are all fairly long. A Feast For Crows is probably still my favourite, because it deals mostly with Jaime and Cersei.

I think I commented early enough that I didn't see any of them except one, which I already sort of knew about, so don't worry about it. :D

And, yeah! I wish I had more time--I can't blow through them the way I really want to. Well, I have some airplane travel next weekend...:D
