Gush - Harry/Draco [R - warning for watersports] by [livejournal.com profile] calanthe_fics.

So you think you hate watersports? Cal may change your mind yet.

On occasion, I've taken issue with a writer's reasoning for writing kinkfic. More often than not, I am completely turned off by an author's egotism as opposed to the subject matter. Nobody, least of all me, is impressed with 'Oh, look at me, everyone! I wrote ponyplay, CBT, bloodplay, necrophilia etc, aren't I the hardcore bitch?' This never fails to elicit a roll of the eyes from me.

I've always been of a 'I could take it or leave it' mind concerning watersports. I don't go running off in search of it, but if something intriguing happens my way, I'll definitely give it a go.

Gush is a lovely preamble for the novice. It focuses equally on the kink as well as the push-pull relationship, and there's a charismatic sincerity to Cal's writing. She writes what she wants to write and fuckerall if you want to join her or not. Me? I find that completely enviable.

Who's the bigger dickhead here remains to be seen. I honestly wanted to shove that jug of pumpkin juice up both their arses, and by the end of the fic, I was still debating on who had had the upper hand. Just the sort of Harry/Draco dynamic I crave.

Ready for something different? My advice -- don't suppress the urge!

It took me quite a while to realise that "gush" meant gush as in... gushing penises, rather than "gushing with praise or excitation" (the initial meaning I think of whenever I see that word). I'm not sure if this makes me weird, crazy, or stupid.

Either way, I have to agree: people who write kink to be 'oh wow I'm so hardcore!' amuse me to no end. I've not had much experience with people who write those sorts of stories, but from what I can gather, they generally don't have much experience with them beyond a passing knowledge gleaned from somewhere on the internet. Perhaps its the realism I dislike. Either way, I will have to read this story! (even though I can't stand H/D :s)

Do you remember Cravache? She wrote a scat fic for no other reason I could see than to shock, and that turned me off way more than the fic content. Which, I must add, was pretty revolting. Needless to say, I was unimpressed. The shit (pun intended) people do for fandom popularity :P

BTW - I bookmarked your SS fic :-)

Not ringing any bells! I'm so "not quite in fandom" that it amuses me sometimes the amount of people who I ought to know but have never heard of. And don't read mine! I won't say it's terrible because I enjoyed writing it, but I have to protest and being humble somewhere. ;)

I think the most brilliant writers make you forget that you're reading a _____ (fill in the blank) genre or kink fic. It's the story and the writing that overtake you. In general I don't go out in search of torture/dark fics, Mpreg, or other more extreme genres or even cliche plotlines of fanfiction. However

When you're reading Cal's Gush, you don't think "this is a watersports fic"
just like
When you read Geoviki's Practicing the Same Religion, you don't think this is an "Mpreg fic"
When you read Sansa's A Frayed and Threadbare Wish, you don't think "time travel fic"
When you read Pir8fancier's Snape: The Home Fries Nazi, you don't think "In America fic"
When you readAmanuensis As Sharp As Sunlight, you don't think "slave/torture/hermaphrodite/Mpreg (maybe a few more too;P) fic"

There's are just a few examples... but all of those genre's are something that I don't particularly seek out, but I will happily try anything if I know/trust and author. :)

I agree wholeheartedly. In the hands of a good author, anything's possible. I LOATH Mpreg, and yet I recced [livejournal.com profile] the_flic's 'Master Green Eyes', because I love what she did with it. She made me forget that I was reading an Mpreg fic.

But Cal's definitely the go-to-gal for maximum kinkage!

One thing I enjoyed about that fic is how Harry and Draco both bring out the worst in each other! It's so classic.

YES! EXACTLY! The worst and sometimes the best. Really, I like both together. *G*

Wow! This is a rec worth framing! My ego thanks you!

You know, sometimes I do smirk to myself and wonder how far I can push readers, but this wasn't one of those times. I just love this topic - in fact I'd forgotten how MUCH I loved it until I started writing.

Love you, darling.

Aww, hang it on your fridge next to something of Cal Jr's!

And I ♥ you, too, dearest :-)

Thanks for reccing this! I'd tried to click from PJ's rec, too, but the post was locked at the time and I wouldn't have thought to check back if not for your rec. I enjoyed it very much, it was funny and hot and the kink written in a way that felt entirely plausible for the characters - which is the most important thing, IMO. And yes, the H/D dynamic was perfect - exactly how I like it, too!

I try not to rec flocked art and stories, because it can be really frustrating. But Cal's very willing to unlock at my request, and I'm really grateful that she does!
