[FIC] Draco Malfoy's Travelling Theatre of the Strange and Spectacular [NC-17] by Mystery Author.
Step right up! Step right up!
Watch as Draco Malfoy plays host to a troupe of human oddities. See as Harry Potter comes to investigate a crime against one of the Blands (non-performers). Delight in the chaos that ensues! Welcome to one of the coolest fics in the fest. The review's about to begin!
Definitely one of my favourites of the fest so far; mystery, intrigue, hot sex, tentacles, lessons in the gay. What's not to love?
So yeah, where was I? *steals Draco's top hat*
Assigned to investigate Draco Malfoy's complaint, Aurors Harry Potter and Dennis Creevey visit the Big Top where Draco is the Grand Dom of a travelling sideshow. When a non-performer is cursed with horrible disfigurements, Harry must find out who's responsible.
The stage is set when Harry has his first conversation with Dennis. Now, I never paid much attention to Creevey the younger, but he's a show-stealer here you won't soon forget. Dennis just happens to be Harry's hopelessly perky and blatantly homosexual partner, and he tries to educate Harry at every turn when he's not being a nuisance (albeit a very entertaining one). *G* Harry, who's straight-laced minus the straight, boggles at Dennis's overt sexuality. He goes home to Ginny and tries to fake his way through lovemaking, and he's just so clumsy and awkward with disinterest, it's hilarious.
Dennis, on the other hand, finds love with Sasha (you just have to wait and see *snickers*), and through this observation of free love, Harry starts to come around a bit. He involves himself with Draco, and the dynamic is just perfect to me. There's a lot of face punching, and I guess I find this endearing through years of endorsing Snape/Black as my OTP. I absolutely need some form of antagonistic behaviour in order for Harry/Draco to work for me as a pairing. And there's snark and fisticuffs a go go, and the chemistry just EXPLODES.
All of the minor characters and OCs are fantastic. I don't want to say too much about them for fear of my squee pointing to the culprit. But there's a host of interesting characters made oddities through magical accidents that give strong performances.
This fic is a bit long, but it's a quick read for 27k. Seriously, my arse was not even feeling the wooden bench. So grab a snow cone, some candyfloss or a box of popcorn and settle in. The show's about to start!
[FIC] The Art of Telling a Lie [NC-17] by Mystery Author.
Just what I love around the holidays; inspiration and miracles.
Upon his return to Hogwarts, eighth year, Harry succumbs to a mysterious illness with a hopeless prognosis. Only everyone doesn't believe it's hopeless, except for Harry. Tirelessly, McGonagall advises, Ron consoles and Hermione researches. But Harry remains pessimistic, that is, until Draco Malfoy comes about and lights a fire under Harry's arse, willing him back into the living.
This fic may sound like a downer, but there's such an undercurrent of real spirit, it's completely uplifting. I was a little misty-eyed in places. And without spoiling much, I'm just going to say that this fic ends on a positive note, because I know that's an understandable concern for some. The appeal for me was the journey of going from one place to another and watching a relationship develop out of heartfelt concern for another human being. Just really touching.
I do, however, have one small concern with the fic. There's a rimming scene that appears out of nowhere and seems far too intimate for the depth of the relationship at that point. Don't get me wrong, I happen to love rimming, but the scene felt a little coerced to me. Still, this is a lovely, lovely fic, and I hope you all obtain from it the same joy that I did. It really is an encouraging holiday fic.

Yeah, um, not-so-mystery-artist, you blow me the fuck away every. single. time. ♥
Enjoy all!
