hd_career_fair Recs!
Sep. 28th, 2009 08:43 amIt occurs to me that in being busy, I let my six year LJ anniversary slip past without notice. Six years, OMG. Where has the time gone? I feel like a fandom dinosaur :P
Also, I have a shitload of links from that 5's Meme I will be putting to use soon. For now, I humbly bring recs.

Incidental Charms [NC-17] by Mystery Author
Shortly after I'd read Ginn Hale's 'Wicked Gentlemen',
lusiology sent me a link for Manna's 'The Administration Series.' I was given mixed reviews; some people loved it, others not so much. So I told myself I'd get back to it.
I'm also not crazy about e-fiction. There's just something about flopping on the couch and holding a good book that gives me the warm fuzzies. But I suppose I could print out the chapters, yes?
Now I have a basic understanding of TAS, which is why I'd decided to venture into unfamiliar territory. But the beauty of 'Incidental Charms' is that you require little to no knowledge of TAS to appreciate the story and its power dynamics. This author effortlessly illustrates both aspects without dumbing down her audience. Hello, Dan Brown, are you taking notes?
A brief synopsis of the fic to whet your appetites: Draco runs a successful company that manufactures daydreams (think Patented Daydream Charms). But when a client's murder occurs, the idyllic lifestyle he leads becomes complicated once Senior Para Investigator Potter steps in.
I really enjoyed this a lot, and while I wouldn't consider this fic dark per se, IC does have its sharper edges. Harry's characterisation does require (at least for me) keeping an open mind, though. He's a lot harsher here than I can believe, but that's just the nature of the beast.
History of the War [R] by Mystery Author.
I've been thinking about this fic for the past two days. I know it's only been a week since Career Fair started, but I've already labelled this fic the sleeper hit of this fest.
At first glance, I was a bit hesitant about reading this. I immediately thought, 'Okay, 20k of cracky swashbuckling is not really what I'm interested in reading here. Do I dare attempt this?'
But while this fic has some humorous facets to its personality, it's nothing near what I'd imagined. And I feel very silly for jumping to such a conclusion.
'History of the War' is a lovely fusion of HP and Age of Sail. Restrictions have been placed upon Wizarding travel, so the Golden Marauder and its motley crew have taken to the seas in search of the Dark Lord. Along the way, Draco is taken prisoner and Captain Harry must deal with Draco accordingly.
In most cases, I could give a frog's fat arse about background characters. In some instances, they're downright distractions for me, but this author offers up a DELIGHTFUL supporting cast that includes Terry Boot and Millicent Bulstrode. And how much do I love the joyfulness that is Pansy/Luna? LOTS and LOTS and LOTS!
There are lots of other little things that I loved about this fic, particularly the mystery that is Harry's eye patch and the misconceptions that surround it. And then there is this excerpt in which I would be remiss in my duties for not sharing;
Harry's like that bloke Crusoe, and he's found his Friday. Though Luna thinks they kidnapped Draco on Sunday. Either way, it's obvious how powerless Harry had been before when she can see his strength now, with his right person by his side.
I know a lot of people are probably going to shy away from this, because yes, there is character death, but if you're looking for something really different, I certainly recommend this.
Enjoy all!
