Fandom Discussion: Severus's Mum and Dad

This is an HBP discussion and not under a cut tag. Can I safely assume we've all read the book by now? And yeah, I know. I said assume :P

So I've been thinking about Severus and his parents. I'm wondering if they are still alive and whether or not Severus still has contact with them. The house on Spinner's End has been vacated, so I'm of the opinion that if they are still alive, Tobias and Eileen are divorced.

I have to wonder how these two met also. If I'm not mistaken, Eileen's described as 'plain.' Maybe she married the first man who paid attention to her? Did he even know she was a witch?

Tobias certainly seems abusive. In OotP, we get a first glimpse of Severus's home life, and it's anything but pretty. He was probably (at the very least) mentally kicked about as a child. This would more than explain his low self-esteem. And little Severus was probably a convenient outlet for Tobias to take out his life's woes on. I can't imagine Tobias made a very good living. And speaking of which, I wonder what kind of job he did have? Anyone care to wager a guess?

What I can't understand is if Severus hated his father so much, why didn't he take his mother's name? It's been pointed out to me that 'Snape' wouldn't be a known surname amongst the purebloods, so why draw unnecessary attention to himself? Or was this at his mother's urging? Was the Prince name possibly tainted?

Severus obviously thought enough of his mother to follow in her foot steps. Although, at such a tender age and with an abusive father, I'd imagine him to be 'clingy.' Mommy's boy, anyone?

So many questions. I could really keep going if I thought on this long enough. What does everyone else think?
