Fandom Discussion: New HBP Additions -- yea or nay?

Since there have been several new character additions from HBP, I decided to do a post to see who took a shine or a dislike to whom -- and also to discuss new favorite ships.

I see no reason really to put this behind a cut. But I implore you, if you have not yet read HBP, DON'T peruse the comments!

So without further adieu...

What new characters did you like/dislike?

What new ships (or renewed interests in old, forgotten ships) have tickled your fancy?

And Severus/Narcissa: for one, I'll ship het!

Chapter 2 made me squee so hard because of this. *G*

I really don't like Slughorn, because I've met too many of him, and usually ended up shielding my best boys from his type.

Your best boys?

Oh, I'm not sure exactly...the thing about Phineas Nigellus is that he was obviously supposed to be on the darker side of gray - Slytherin, worst headmaster ever, etc. But, when he gave Harry that brief message from Dumbledore that one time, he made some really good points about teenagers. I like how Slughorn is also definitely A Shade of Gray, with his sucking-up and favorites and contacts and all else, while he really doesn't mean any harm and clearly feels regret about his close connection with Tom Riddle - but he doesn't strike me as being quite as smart or clever as Phineas.

The Blaise stuff really feels like it was done for fandom...I imagine JKR wondering what all the interest in this not important and hardly mentioned character was, then deciding to clarify the boy/girl!Blaise thing, and adding the description just so people will stop wondering. Of course by making him *hot* she has no doubt spawned a whole new rash of Blaise fics.

Likes:
Slughorn! I love the idea of a slimy and not overtly evil Slytherin.

So-so:
Fenrir - He's a little too far into dark fic for me, but I would be interested in seeing some dominance fic, maybe with Lupin or Lucius? (Yes, I have a thing for dominant males).

Dislikes:
Could we please have just *one* female character who isn't angsting? JKR needs to realize that just because she got herself hitched and is popping babies out doesn't mean that she has to pair off every single female in the series. Women really can stand on their own. *gasp*

Pairings:
My new crack pairing is Lily/Slughorn... I *need* to see someone right this, or I'll have to do it myself.

Bella/Snape has some interesting possibilities, if I can get past the Snupin bug that I seem to have caught.

And I would love to see Tonks femmeslash. I'm a R/T shipper, but I would love to see a woman with strength of character beat Little Miss Nymphadora with a cluebat.

The gay, bi, and undecided guys I hung out with in my first couple of years at university. I should have been more clear on that, but I think I was trying to reply to a mass of HP threads all at once -- sorry.

I have vivid memories of standing on the doorstep finding excuses not to let my flatmate's lecturer in after he had been a little bit too pushy with the third member of our household a a party the week before.

So Slughorn's an interesting character (and it's not as if I don't write about equally dodgy blokes), but I can't bring myself to like him, and find him an odd addition to what is after all a kid's book.

Okay, how did I miss a VAMPIRE.

Don't speed read kids, it kills.

*jumps on with both feet* Fenrir. Jeebus but he's potent material. Even with Lupin I was never sure how vicious werewolves could be in the Rowlingverse and the answer is: extremely. Makes the stakes that much higher for Lupin to get ...entangled.

And there will be chan. Oh ho HO will there be chan. *squicks slightly, limps, walks it off*

I got right back in love with Dumbledore, saw Harry/Dumbledore for the first time, maybe it was Dumbledore being all heroic and virile and ...never mind. Ew.

Hagrid/Olypme!

I'm thinking of a sexy fluffy fic involving Bill and Fleur's wedding night...which let's say...happens to be near a full moon...and Remus comes to see if they're alright, certain wine is drunk, etc. However I practically forgot who Bill was in this book, kept mixing him with Charlie, so that needs some clarifyin'.

Bellatrix/Snape/Narcissa. Everyone's thinking it, Pettrigrew's filmin' it. Hehehe.

Tom/Harry, Harry/Draco, Draco/Myrtle. ...what? Did I mention Gauntcest? Pretend I didn't say anything.

I think what's better than all the nifty new pairing possibilities is that there are a ton of genfic opportunities to be had. I would love a flashback MWPP era Slug Club scene. Lucius being told his son had failed.

but the big'un to come out of this book, somewhat accidentally?

Snapledore. *ew* *aw* *ew* *aw*

Oh nooooo now you'll have to read it all over again! What a hardship ;D But yeah, a vampire. His bit is definately the funniest bit.

Oh, I'm fairly certain 'someone' will write it -- and soon.

Harry/Ginny is absolutely gag-worthy, I agree. Don't care for Remus/Tonks either

Loved Fenir Greyback though *phwooarrr*

[identity profile] naalula.livejournal.com 2005-07-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Fenrir. Who can dislike so much potential for darkfics?

Slughorn, because he's hilarious.

Harry/Draco, for a lot more than hate!sex now, despite the whole nose-breakage and sectosempra business, Harry finally saw Draco as a human being and let's face it, Draco's always been obssessed...

Sounds like a good excuse to re-read :D
