Anachronism [NC-17] by
starcrossdkayla.
I've been calling this the 'gold stars' fic. Firstly, because I think the author deserves a box of gold stars for her forehead for being so prolific. And secondly, because I think I deserve a few myself for finishing 96,000 words. My attention span is usually good for about half that baring the rarest of circumstances. Was that a typo, you ask? Did I inadvertently add another zero? Nope, Anachronism was 96k, and I enjoyed every. last. word.
When I first spied this fic, I thought 'Okay, this is way too long. I can't make time for this.' But I kept my eye on it, scrolling through (carefully monitoring for spoilers) now and again for a peek at the reviewers. And yes, with a fic of this size and intensity, I let myself be swayed by a few names I know and trust. No harm in that, I'm sure you'd agree.
I was immediately seduced and did everything I could over the next week to steal myself away from less important matters (like work :P) to finish this.
But enough of that, you want to know what the fic's about, right?
Anachronism is like a well-balanced meal with a dessert cheat. There's mystery and intrigue and romance (although, much later on) and scorching hot UST that eventually leads to burning hot sex.
Without spoiling much -- because I think this fic needs to be experienced first hand like riding a bike or skydiving or making love -- Snape awakens to find himself not weeks or months after his snake bite recovery, but years into a future with Harry in which he has no recollection. Slowly, he begins to piece his life back together and the results are more than a bit surprising.
I was really impressed with this author's storytelling and world building. And the best part? I discovered an author I'd never read before, and I made a new friend. I'm really eager to tuck into her other stories!
There's a time commitment with this fic, obviously, but for me it was time well spent. Hopefully, you'll agree!
She Who Knows the Orphan [PG-13] by
dacro.
Ancient Egypt Snarry. It seems rather impossible, doesn't it? And yet, Julie makes it happen, redefining B.C. as 'brilliant concept.'
Long have I been a fan of Egyptology, dating back to school field trips as a wee lass. I was highly impressed with this historically, and I could tell that Julie put in a great deal of research to accurately portray daily life. She keeps Snape and Harry very in character despite the time displacement, and manages personality traits as well as physical attributes without so much as a ripple.
In 'Orphan', Harry (renamed Harefre) becomes the Pharaoh's newly appointed court Magician after defeating the Pharaoh's would-be assassin with accidental magic. Harry's then told he must choose a personal servant, and his choice falls on a former priest and healer who's been accused of murder.
This is a highly unique story, and I'm always impressed with Julie's imaginative scenarios. I almost want to challenge her to write prehistoric Snarry, because if anyone can, it is she.
