Fandom Discussion: Misspelling Proper Names

Okay, folks...

Is it so much to ask to reference the correct spellings of proper names from either the books or the Lexicon?

In the past month, I have ran across THREE fics where a character's name was spelled incorrectly. Now, I know that we are all human and make mistakes, but a typo that's skirted past weary eyes is something all together entirely different from misspelling oh say, G-R-I-F-E-N-D-O-R. *cues her audience to cringe*

The first fic I encountered was a Lucius/Draco with a brief mention of Walden Macnair. Macnair was spelled M-C-N-A-I-R. Apparently the 'a' went AWOL. And funny, nobody that reviewed the fic caught this.

Oh-kay, moving right the fuck along, the next fic I encountered was a Snape/Bellatrix. Now all of you Rodolphus Lestrange fans are going to be plucking your eyeballs out over this. Rodolphus's name was spelled not once, not twice, but THREE different ways -- in ONE fic. Rudolphus, Rodulphus, and Rodolphus.

I have issues with the word 'cinnamon.' I am forever looking this bitch up. For some odd reason, I can never remember how to spell it. Two 'n's? Two 'm's? But to spell it both ways and think, well, one way must be right...is just trifling. So I use my handy dandy online dictionary. It's just that simple.

The last fic I ran across was by far the WORST. How the fuck do you misspell Severus? No shit, I found a fic where he was referred to as Saverus. Saverus? What the FUCK is that? Doesn't that have a bit of a Vulcanesque ring to it? I'm reading this story for shits and giggles and picturing Snape with pointy ears and arched eyebrows.

Pon Farr? Live Long and Prosper? *headdesk*

Any stories you'd care to share? Leave 'em here!

Ah, but see the Romulans are descendants of the Vulcans.

Rihannsu, eh? Methinks you've read Diane Duane :-)

Should be required reading, methinks. (me also has loud opinions on mis-spellings, but cannot locate the worst offenders as they have been wiped from my memory to save on storage space. Damnit.)

Wait. I have it. Hermione - admittedly a tricky name - misspelled sixty-eight different ways. You have one minute. And.... go!

Pity, 'My Enemy, My Ally' and 'The Romulan Way' are out of print.

*blinks*

I thought that they were re-issuing them to fit in with the new random half-books she's been writing, 'Honour Blade and 'SwordHunt' (and I am not impressed with this whole 'write half a book then make them wait yearsfor the rest' malarky)? Or are they taking their own sweet time about it?

Also? What's with the endless cross-overs of theme and time and who cares? I'm not spending £XXX on a series that doesn't care about character building, just ... verisimilitude and the 'cool' factor.

Anyway.

Yes.

Spelling.

Is she EVER going to tell us what happens when Ael finally gets the damn Sword?

Is she EVER going to tell us what happens when Ael finally gets the damn Sword?

No.

She's too busy shagging her ex-superhero-pilot husband. *grumble*

Also, she's an evil woman that must take some odd, bizarre pleasure out of our suffering.

Well, that's my theory.

You know, I wouldn't mind if someone - anyone! - would write some Rihannsu fanfic but does anyone write book!fanfic? Do they, buggery.

Mind you, it's been years since I've followed TOS fandom, but when last I did, they were out of print.

Well, yes, me too, but I had this very cathartic experience wherein my parents demanded that I remove some of the mountain of books that has grown babies and tentacles and taken over all their storage space and move them to my new house.

During the move, I re-discovered her evil 'half-books', and checked to see what she's been writing.

Nothing.

Still waiting.

Damnit.

Also, while I love all of Diane's books, I treasure the Rihannsu series because Ael and Arrhae have not (yet, please G-d please) been made to fight the Lone Power.

All her other books:

Herewiss and Freelorn vs. the Lone Power.

Kit and Nita and friends vs. the Lone Power.

Rhiow the witch cat vs. the Lone Power.

Give it a break!!!

*confesses ignorance*

Lone Power?

[identity profile] tekalynn.livejournal.com 2004-12-29 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Evil, basically. The Lone Power, because it keeps to itself (Luciferian pride?) and won't play nice with the rest of the universe. Or something...my Duaneology is very limited.
