That is the question, folks!

When writing anal scenes (and no, this is NOT limited to male/male slash), do you prefer a nice lubrication spell, or does your preference run with something more creative in the way of commercial lubricants?

What's the strangest item you've used as a substitute for a lubricant?

Have you ever written fics with lubricated condoms?

Have you ever written fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario?

Finally, anything else you'd like to add on the topic?

Let's hear what you have to say!

As I'm an artist, I've never actually written much of anything. Just felt like spamming your page, sorry. XD

I generally prefer to use some sort of salve, mostly of the handmade potion variety. Then again, I write a lot of sex with Snape, so that could have something to do with it; I don't imagine him partaking of a commercial lubricant, because something synthetic that near his bits (or his arse) would NOT make him happy! Sometimes, I'll just mention the lube in passing, like describe it in a generic fashion, but it always comes out of a pot, or a jar, or a phial, or something...never out of a tube.

I have written fics using a spell, one for stretching and one for lubrication, but...call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the hands-on approach.

As far as strange substitutes for lube...THUS far, the oddest thing I've used is blood. Or chocolate. They're both pretty odd, LOL! BUT, one of the ones I'm writing right now...is...significantly odder. But I shan't spoil it.

I don't write fics with condoms at all, at least not fanfic. i wrote one RPS that involved condoms, but there was lube used as well...you know, just in case. *chuckles*

And yes, I have written people being fucked dry. Yay for torture. *grins*

As far as anything extra...erm...I love words like "slick" and "slippery" and "salve" and "sliding" and so forth (I guess I just like s and l as letters when it comes to sex :D), so more often than not, I'll skip past the actual description of the physical lube and will focus more on the sensations and, sometimes, the sounds.

1. I used mostly real oils or ones that I've made up.
2. In fic or in RL? LOL In fic, fabric softener. Don't ask.
3. Actually, no. I tend to write established relationship and though I know I should write condom usage in, I never do because I find condoms amusing and the scene would end up too humorous. Not that it isn't already.
4. Yes, but it wasn't non-con. I just didn't write it in.

Finally, anything else you'd like to add on the topic?

Have you ever seen this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/percy_weatherby/179321.html)? That amused me to no end, no pun intended. :>

Yay, I get to use my appropriate icon!

I really dislike lubrication spells. Usually I have them accio something. Probably the oddest thing was olive oil.

I very rarely write anal scenes at all -- I seem to run to blowjobs and hand jobs for the most part. In my HP fic, I can think of exactly one scenario where there's anal that's described in any detail and maybe two others where it's mentioned at all. In the one scenario -- Snape/Percy -- Snape had some salve that he used which aided, somewhat magically, in the muscle-relaxing process, but that was never made explicit, just hinted at. As well, I always tacitly assume that there is no need in the wizarding world for condoms, either to prevent STDs or pregnancy.

I find lubrication spells to be rather, well, silly. I'd rather the author just gloss over it somehow.

OTOH, I recently posted a Stargate slash story and was so pleased to find myself writing about two adult men in a non-magical world that there was K-Y and latex galore: for rimming, for fucking, for sucking. It was like a kink all of a sudden. *g*

I don't *think* I've written un-lubricated anal ever. And I don't think I've ever used any sort of lubricant-substitute.

In conclusion, there is no word I hate more than "lube". It just sounds so stupid and non-sexy.

Spells just seem too... easy and convenient for me. I've written them, but I prefer some sort of Potterverse equivalent to lube, just not getting specific. Spells annoy me when they are done wandlessly and the person just HAPPENS to have their wand right there, not across the room in their robe/cloak/trousers pocket or on the table or what have you.

i don't write (well not that much) but i HATE reading Lubrication spells. it just makes me roll my eyes.

i always prefer "strange substance" in jar #1. not being mentioned like its a big thing, just kind of an every day occurance ;)

It bugs the hell out of me when people skip mentioning any lubrication at all (except in a non-con where the bottom is clearly suffering), but beyond that I don't care if it's a spell or something from a jar. In HP fic, the word "tube" kind of throws me out, because it does suggest Muggle store-bought, and only certain characters can pull that off.

Lube spells are my un-overcomeable "OMG that's so silly!" I just can't bring myself to write 'em that way, or keep from giggling if I see them in a story.

And I know that it was one of those author-comment moments when I wrote in a story that the characters found it easier to just go to the bathroom and get the lube rather than going after their wands in their discarded clothing and accio-ing it over...

I see nothing wrong with lubrication spells when a wand is used, if Molly can make sauce come out of hers, I can make lube come out of Snape's. I tend to prefer Snape having something at hand, but it depends on the setting. But natural oils - like olive oil, are perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

I read something like that in a story once and I remember thinking how convoluted it was that they would go over to get their wand when they could just get up to get the lube. It's like they were trying to beat us over the head that they were WIZARDS and had WANDS! :))

1) I usually prefer the more inventive/creative options, just because I read alot and I tend to get tired of the spell.

2) I have nothing to ever compare with [livejournal.com profile] dracorocksmysox's fabric softener. That was brilliance.

3) No. I don't tend to write condoms in at all.

4) Several, unposted and usually promptly deleted. 'Mushy Rape' fics (Rashy...you're much better off not knowing. They are weird, very weird.)

Hmm. I write quite a bit of anal- personal kink, plus the straight-male-penetration thing that I can't help but have. The Moody/Neville sex magic fic was pre-come, but they were in a hurry and stuck in the London Underground. Otherwise it's a pot of salve, combined with chocolate frogs in my Albus/Tom fic. No condoms- the closest I can imagine the Wizarding World having is sheep guts.

Or... goat intestines... now, there's that Aberforth fic I've been meaning to write...

I've used lubrication spells when the deliberate effect is to reduce the eroticism of the scene. Making the 'caring' act of using a lube into something so perfunctory is a great way to turn off the romance (such as in a Snape/Black fic like 'Sorry', when the sex was meant to be without any caring or affection).

In stories where caring and affection are important, I'll use more tender applications of potions, for example.

Lubrication spells make me snicker.

Have never used condoms in a fic.

Have used no lubrication in brutal smut, then realized it would probably really, really, REALLY hurt.

Most bizarre lubrication in a fic: chicken grease. Then again, it was Snape/Harry/Macnair at a feast for Voldemort, so...

What's the strangest item you've used as a substitute for a lubricant?
Personally? Anally? Almond oil, poured into a martini glass. Somebody forgot to remove the martini glass afterwards, so the bedroom smelled like almond oil for days afterwards. I can't smell almonds now without thinking anal sex.

Um... ooh! Rose-scented, body lotion that a friend gifted me (or maybe my partner) with. I have no idea why, but we used that for ages. It frothed a little, which surely means it was a bad idea, and it was the moisturisey-kind... and I got that far before somebody knocked on my door and I've spent the last two hours entertaining guests, and I have no idea what I was saying.

But anal sex, yeah yeah.

Have you ever written fics with lubricated condoms?
Nope. My characters don't apppear to have safer sex.

Have you ever written fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario?
Nope.

Yes. I really really love that icon. So blonde! So shiny! *glomps*

As an idea.

Um, I've used both the lubrication spell and the common lubricant. It tends to be that I'll use the spell when the characters are in a hurry, or if they are in a place that they don't have lube otherwise available to them.

Never used condoms in my fics.

And yes, I have written several fics where no lubrication was used, save semen, precome, or spit. One of them was non con, the others weren't. What can I say? It's one of my kinks. :D

My characters tend to go for the nonspecific oil or potion. Don't much like the spells. And the one time someone thought to accio the bottle, they realized they'd left their wand where the potion was anyway, so they got up and got it.

No weird lube substitutes in my fic... weirdest IRL wasn't all that weird, just hotel hand lotion, and that worked fine.

One thing I love about writing wizards is that they don't have to use condoms. I don't like them much IRL, and I HATE writing them.

Lubrication spells don't really bother me. Like others have said, it all depends on the setting. A lot of my ideas for my slashfic come from my gay friends, all of whom assure me of the following:

1) Lube is not always available, nor do most men carry it around.

2) Saliva can work, but if you don't use enough it just gets crusty and causes pain/annoyance.

3) When in doubt, leave it out. Blowjobs and handjobs work fine. Salad dressing, hot sauces, and anything else with spices or extremely strong chemicals should not be used as substitutes because they hurt like a biznatch.

So really, if Harry and Draco are getting it on in the closet, they're not going to have flavoured lubricant available.

Otherwise, I've never written about condom usage [because I buy flavoured condoms just to lick them and I'd feel bad ficcing that; yes, I am insane] and the strangest lube I ever used was a melted candy cane.

I'm more a reader than a writer, but still my two cents.

1) I despise Lubrication spells. I feel they are one of the most useless, redundant and fangirlish spell inventions ever made in slashdom. It's not as if lube (or anything that appopriatly replaces it) was extremely rare or extremely hard to get, and it's a spell nearly exclusively hinting for anal sex (unless someone makes creative use of a spell that is actually for something completely else, then it's okay). A tad obvious. Also, making for good lube when one can't go and buy some, can be fun and creative. Same when none is available at all.

2) No strange lube used, ever. Read a few things, but most of the times it were things like honey or other very sticky things which only make me go "Uh..ow? This defies the purpose completely?". Condoms: I don't like them IRL, simply out of aesthetic reasons so they don't make me very happy in fanfic either, but I can deal.

3) Last comment: Lo and behold, wonder and gasp, it is not always unrealistic to write anal sex with no lube, especially in a con scene. There are really people who feel no pain when penetrated, even by a cock. Mostly when they're in the right mood. There recently was a discussion about it in [livejournal.com profile] gay_sex_tips and I myself was once one of those persons as well.

When I have written anal scenes, I do not use spells. Why use spells, when teh physical application makes for more sexier, hotter and awkward scenes?
I have used olive oil as a lubricant. Not the strangest, but certainly not on ethat comes to mind. And hey, I would think that in the wizarding world they would like a simple, natural solution like that!
NEver written a non-con. Don't have the talent. Same with non lubrication- it's not me, and not how I see the characters.

I think spells are so- ugh- i dunno not-creative, boring, someone above said "fangirlish". Yeah. I don't care for them. Commercial for soem characters, but for others- well just whatever is already around and easy for them, eg: snape woudl probably make his own. And some would just use spit or not bother.

What's the strangest item you've used as a substitute for a lubricant?
In a fic? Uhm, Sleak Easy's but Bugland already spoke for me on that one. In real life, er, I'm bland as far as that goes, sorry.

Have you ever written fics with lubricated condoms?
YICK. No. The thought of condoms send shivers up my spine, disgusting (this is likely influenced by the fact i'm horribly allergic to rubber, the thoguht of writing a scene with them is as exciting as thinking about writing about a roll in ragweed and poison ivy)

Have you ever written fics with no lubrication whatsoever in say a non-con scenario?

Yes, and in con ones too. As someone pointed out above, its not always needed (and its not always painful without) but I'll second that with RL experience.

I switch back and forth, depending on my mood and the pairing. For instance, I have Remus use spells pretty often, the younger boys all fumble with lubricant (typically our normal, 'Muggle' type), and Snape has potions. But even within those guidelines, I don't always adhere because that'd be boring. Sometimes you don't want to indulge in the lubricant procedure, so it's just easier to say they cast "Lubricus" or something funny like that. :D [livejournal.com profile] memorycharm has a fic where the people involved discuss lubricating spells and how someone might accidentally say the wrong thing and make someone lose something vital. Hee. I'd like someone to take that line to its logical conclusion.

Substitutes for lubricant -- I've had characters use Vaseline and cooking oil, but I'm pretty much a lube-purist. I don't like the idea of things in bodies that have no right being there (in consensual scenarios, of course ;) ). I've got a bunny involving lubricated condoms that I keep meaning to write, but I like being in a fandom where I don't have problems in not incorporating them. When I was reading in Buffy, there were certain pairings where I'd be screaming at them to use condoms.

And, yes, I've done one no lube, non-con scenario, and it's definitely the most violent sex scene I've ever written. Still like it, though.
