My fortieth birthday was the best I'd had in years. I celebrated at a work Christmas party, but after that, the group I was with dragged me out to a karaoke bar and plied me full of copious amounts of alcohol. And I triumphed by NOT succombing to the call, and I remained in the audience. Best for everyone, I assure you.
I've been a single mom since age 26, and 40 was the turning point for me. It's like I'm done with that stage of my life where my kids take up all my time and energy. I'd lost sight of me as a person (besides being a mom or an employee), and I vowed to change that. To get a piece of me back. My kids still come first, but I make time for me now.
So ... my forties have been liberating. It's been three years since I made that commitment to myself. The time has been filled with ups and downs, but I no longer feel guilty doing things just for me.

Overall, I'm enjoying my forties.
