A lot of people who grew up on farms don't see their dogs and cats as companions but as working animals, so they're not always that understanding. And then there are the people who are just plain heartless gits.
I'm watching "Half Blood Prince," and while writing this Hermione explained that her parents are dentists and the other students give her a blank look. Same reaction as some people to our love of pets, ha. ;-)
