Since a lot of people in fandom claim to have an OTP, I was interested in doing a discussion about threesomes and OT3s. I've broken this discussion up into two parts; personal and fandom related. I encourage you to answer the following questions under your LJ name, but if you feel uncomfortable, please feel free to skip the top section.
Personal
Have you ever participated in a threesome?
If you answered 'no' would you consider doing so?
If you answered 'yes' was/were the threesome(s) mixed or same sex?
If you answered 'yes' would you do so again?
What is it about a threesome that attracts/doesn't interest you?
Has your experience been a help/deterrent in writing threesomes in fanfic?
Fandom
One of my first forays into fandom was actually the Severus/Sirius/Remus threesome. Since Sirius/Remus and Severus/Sirius were my favorite pairings at the time, it made a lot of sense to me to combine the pairings into 'one' threesome. Conflict, jealousy, and love would prove exciting and intriguing, and thus a whole new dynamic was created. It went way beyond the hot sex, because there was always an element of plot building. How did they all come to agree upon this? Would one forego his hatred/ambivalence of the other to please his lover? Did it have positive or negative consequences? There were just so many things to consider, and it became an interesting challenge.
Of course many people find writing threesomes distracting, because the focus isn't just on two but on one additional other. Each party involved must have an equal if not active role in the threesome, and sometimes this becomes tiring when the attention veers towards one or two of the three. Still, fandom doesn't seem to mind the work involved. The popularity of threesomes has increased steadily since I joined. Most notably is triofic (Harry/Ron/Hermione), and one of these days I'll get around to tackling this threesome myself. So, here is where I ask you the reader your thoughts on threesomes and OT3s.
Do you enjoy reading/writing threesomes?
If so, what threesomes do you favor?
If not, what specifically turns you off about threesomes?
Do you have an OT3? If so, what threesome do you most enjoy and why?
Any parting words?
Love to hear everyone's thoughts!
