Fandom Poll: PWP versus Plot

Been thinking a lot about the two. There are ticky boxes to behold. Wheee!

[Poll #552870]

When I'm first into a fandom, and passionate about it, and attracted to the characters I want smut. Hotter the better. But once I start to cool on it, it takes a good story with intelligent plot to keep me interested.

I'm exactly the same! The pr0n is all exciting and yummy when the fandom's still new to me, but I get tired of it real quickly. After that, it tends to go towards milder and milder - kind of the reverse of the gate theory in drugs - and finally I find myself where I am right about now, that is, a damn prude. I actually have a hard time writing anything smutty any more, and - to my utter embarrassment - I actually find myself skipping the naughty bits when reading some stories, just to get on with the plot that intrigues me.

So, so sad, I know *g*

Haha that is so true! My first HP fic was pure PWP, and it totally started the addiction, although I'm still a big fan of teh smut.

Is it wrong that I do the opposite of you, and sometime skip the boring plotty bits to get to the smut? LOL

Hee, that's what I did when I first got into fandom!:D But then the novelty wore off and now it's mostly just plot for me, even without the pr0n *ashamed*

Yes, that's exactly it! When the fandom is fresh and new, then it's like being passionately in love for the first time. Lustfully in love! And in the stories there's dicks and bums and legs in the air and joyful abandon!

But after a while, the lust cools, and maybe you just want to be friends, maybe by then you just love them for their minds. They're cool, fun, great to be with, but keep the pants on, okay? That's when a plot and story and humour become de riguer.

Hee, I had never thought of it like that, but you're absolutely right! It is rather like a honeymoon:D

I think I've reached the 'companion' stage, where I know and love my fandom as much as ever, but I just can't be bothered with the sweaty part quite as often as I used to. Moderately intrigued and slightly amused is what I'm aiming at. *g*

Oh, and don't I feel like the old fart that I am now!:D

How long does it take before the cooling period sets in?

[identity profile] iibnf.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Varies wildly. Been an awfully long time with Snape fandom, over four years. Sometimes it can be just a few weeks!

Some fandoms have shelf lives of a few weeks :P
